battery broke free and fell into engine bay, need help

so i was driving through some rough terrain and somehow my battery broke free... and it fell into the engine bay. the red plastic on the positive side was up against the manifold and melted to it. I didn't notice it till i went out to put my truck in the garage, and when i tried to start it it didn't make any noise at all when turning over, no clicking or anything. i'm guessing i'm gonna need a new battery, but is there anything else i should try before spending 100 bucks on a new one? i tried jump starting it after getting the battery back into place and nothing happened. any help would be great.

If your battery doesn't leak and its full of fluid you could try charging it, but i do think that that kind of a jolt probably broke a plate inside the battery, if you try charging it use caution..

If the positive terminal was touching the manifold than the battery probably drained all the charge till its dead.

You could always remove it and have it tested at an auto parts store. I'm guessing it's toast though. Bummer

Advanced Auto gave me a $5.00 gift card for my shot battery last summer. They may still offer that deal if you take yours to them.

Is the cable burnt or was only the connector grounding it out?

Start tracing wires for melting and such before you put a new battery in there or you could do even more damage! Wire harnesses are a muther to replace.

That was no gift. They make a staggering amount of money doing that. Hell, I'll give anyone five bucks cash for an old battery myself.

They scrap for 10 dollars each at the scrap yard. Repeat like a zillion times like Advance is doing, and you'll make a pile of money.

Yup, but they turn it into a PR event. I'm surprise they didn't have a local news crew there as they handed over a $5 check while shaking hands and kissing babies.

That's funny.

I can see how they could spin it as being a friend to the environment. Not only are they getting those nasty old batteries disposed of, they're giving the folks five bucks for their trouble bringing them in.

O'Reileys has the same $5 deal. The local scrapper only pays $1.50 so it's better than that.

Good point.

When they come to MY HOUSE (read: "burn their $4.25/gal gas"), I'll give my dead bats to them for $5. And, they get a free cup of good coffee.
