need some fuel gauge install help. PLEASE
Happy Turkey day!
the PO hacked up the gauge cluster and put in aftermarket gauges. I bought a fuel gauge to match what was already there looks wise. it's an Auto Meter 90 ohm gauge. I have a stock tank and sending unit in my 67 Chevy. I will run all new wires for it. problem is.. I don't know what I'm doing for sure and could use someone laying it out a bit for me to understand what i need to do. |

I could be wrong but don't the aftermarket fuel gauges require a sending unit unique to them? Not sure if it would work with a stock sender.

Re: need some fuel gauge install help. PLEASE
It's pretty simple once you install the gauge in the cluster. You will have a pink wire from the cluster pin no.3 on the plug. It will go to the fuse panel. The other side of the gauge is a tan wire at pin 4 on the cluster plug. It will go to the fuse panel at the fuel ga, terminal and there is a tan or brown wire from there to the sending unit terminal in the center of the sending unit flange.
Here is a nice diagram that shows the wiring in the gauge cluster. It is different if you have the idiot light gauge cluster. The wires to the cluster plug pins are in different slots. Here is the layout with a dash cluster plug. Here is the pin connections with the idiot light cluster. Notice the fuel gauge feed pink wire is on pin 7. The sending unit wire is still on 4 Here is the fuse panel and the fuel ga. spade is in the upper right end. Make sure the gauge cluster is grounded and the sending unit is grounded to the tank and the tank is grounded to the cab.

Here's a couple of pics of the tach from the rear. H's picking up the positive power for the tach from the red wire running to the power side of the fuel gauge. There is a brown wire that runs to the HEI to the tach terminal or to the coil negative side for points and another wire for the tach light. The tach light can be wired into the dash lights for dimming with the headlight switch. The gray wire in the cluster plug is the dash lights wire for the four lights that light up the instruments. It also powers the lights in the heater switch panel. Here's one with just the tach mounted. It shows the four panel lights and the directional lights.
