Re: old skool way...?

Yeah, was going to do two but that battery box rubs when turn right to fast, any more will require moveing the battery, save that for when I bag it. It brought me down about three inchs. It got nice rake to but going cut 1/2 this week in back to level it out.

Re: old skool way...?

well im going to try and figure out if my current wheels will slip up inside fenders or if they are stickin out alittle to far before removing springs. but if i do have to change wheels would i be looking for a set that where the bolts are is sitting toward rhe outer part of wheel...say like chevy avalanche or tahoe qheels, i know they have same bolt pattern and i think more od wheel would be roward inside if that is what i would need.

Re: old skool way...?

I like it. Yes, first get it running and stopping properly. The stance looks good the way it sits. It might grow on you. Thanks for the update.

Re: old skool way...?

Hey guys, for those of you that cut the rear.....did u have to relocate the shocks? Also, the traction bar...... How do u recenter the rear and measure to right length? Could u tell me how many coils cut equals how many inches dropped? Thanks. Gonna be getting a static coil drop from early classics or cpp but I was just thinking of leveling off the rear for now the cheap way, just temporarily. Here is a pic of my ride as it sits totally stock right now. I just got the rims/tires u see on her and a rewriting kit for her too.

Re: old skool way...?

I had torched springs on my 65 when I bought it and it looked cool, but the ride was horrible. Who ever did it, only put the heat on one side of the spring. they were almost in the shape of a "C".

I ended up swapping them for another pair of springs that I cut to get it lower. The stance was the same, but the ride was not much better. If its a casual driver, then the cut springs you can deal with. But if its going to be a daily drivers, you may want to rethink this method.

Re: old skool way...?

I was just thinking of cutting the rear to level it out until I get "real" lowering springs. Any idea how many coils I need to cut to level it with front, if front is stock? Thanks

Here is rear spring replacement...saggy old Chevy springs for new Chevy springs but should be much the same for puttin in your jeep springs....

One spring replaced. Ol John Lee keeps riden on.

On the other side, heres how I did it...first step was several weeks of soaking with PB blaster and rocking the nuts/bolts back and forth untill they started to free up w/o squeeking. Jack up the axle, block up the frame, we're gonna dangle the contol arm to release all tension on the springs.

Remove the shock at the lower mount and start dropping the rear axle to a dangle and loosen up top and bottom bolts.

Dont remove em, just get em loose.

Shake the spring, if its completly loose/not compressed, pull the bolts and nuts.

Note the position of the spring clamps, flat side to open end of springs, knock em loose and reuse if they are still good.

Re: old skool way...?

I'll be changin the control arm bushings later and will have to drop the control arms so, every fittin gets some grease for assembly torque and for removal any time in the future.

I had to jack the control arm up and down several times to wiggle the springs and their clamps into proper position, centered on the frame and centered on the control arm.

Remember, flat side of clamp to open end of spring...note the spring ear lays on the control arm, not outside the edge.

Same on the top spring clamp, flat to open end of spring, spring end on the frame not sticking past the edge...snug em up, raise the jack/lower the jack/raise the jack, snug it more, repeat till tight. Torque specs I used were greased threads, 1/2" drive wrench with a 2 foot cheater and mosta my upper body strength in the cramped space.

Much better stance, drivers side sag is gone.

Front springs another day, likely in conjunction with the dual pot install.

Try some of the 4x4 shops around, if they are doing the lifting, they may have a pile of springs.

I didn't relocate shocks since as stated....worn out chevy springs for new chevy springs.

Ya start cutting, only one clamp end is left on the spring....

Heat em and they sag crooked/ride aweful.

Best bet, buy lowered springs, they bolt on both ends just like the install above. Most catalogs indicate ya start havein shock bottoming and/or relocation issues when ya drop the back end more than two inches.

Yer other quick and cheep and safe option is to put a spacer block tween the axle and the axle ubolt and leave the stock springs alone. I think ya can do about 2 inches of lowering that way too w/o getting into shock issues but ya might have to trim off yer rubber snubbers.

Really, fore ya go nuts with jeep springs and/or cutting wheels, look at the installation instructions from many of the lowered spring/suspension mfgrs....lots of good info in there and way better than just hackin the factory springs or tossin in jeep springs an hopein it works.

I always say its best to research while yer savin so when yer spendin its on a good decision and not on rework or worse, accident damage!

Yeah, 4" drop an yer into short shocks/relocated shocks, different panhard bar and getting close to needin a notch in the frame, exhaust clearance, etc, etc. Its a big project ya got in mind...look at dropped trucks at shows and do lotsa research.....might be morin ya want out the gate!
