56 3600 SBC/4WD Trans Question
Hey guys,
I have a 383 stroker I built from a 73 vette's 350. I am going to do a 4WD conversion on my truck and I already have an np205 transfer case. I will most likely be running Dana 44 in the front and corporate 12 in the rear. 383 will be putting out about 400 hp and 450 ft lbs of torque. I am looking for a 5-speed manual w/ overdrive. I heard good things about the NV4500 and I know it hooks up with the SBC and np205, but I also believe it is a low-geared slow-shifting truck tranny? Mainly this truck is going to be powerful, the 4WD conversion is only for snowy winters. I need the overdrive for 3 hours of daily highway/country road commuting and I would like a sportier transmission. I was looking for more of something like the Tremec TKO, but I don't believe it will work with the np205. Any ideas? |

Re: 56 3600 SBC/4WD Trans Question
I would go with a divorced NP205 from an early to mid 70s Dodge, that way you can run any Trans you can come up with and not have to worry about adapting a Trans to work.

I would do the nv4500 with the adapter kit to use the np205 on it.But what size tires are you going to run on it?

Re: 56 3600 SBC/4WD Trans Question
If you decide on an nv4500 use a 95+ version. 1st gear isn't as low and the gears are spaced more closely together.

Re: 56 3600 SBC/4WD Trans Question
I am pretty sure I will be going with 3.73 gears and about 29" tires. After doing some more research, I am leaning back towards the nv4500/np205 again. This thing is going to be heavy and possible tow the snowmobiles back and forth from Rhode Island to Maine.
