building flame throwers

On my 58 Apache I am going to be running dual 1.5" straight pipes w/ 5" tips on a 235 Chevy six. So I am wanting to put a flamethrower exhaust on it. I have a list of stuff I need to build them but I want to wire them so that it works as an active ignition type flame thrower like what hot licks exhaust offers. And to wire them can I run my main ignition coil plus the other two for the flame throwers on my ignition points and it not affect performance of the engine?

I think you had better ask that one over on Killbillet or some other rat rod board. You might get the response you want.

my son had a home built version of those on his 68 elcamino, might have had $20 in the set up.
flame throwers ignite the raw gas coming from the carb through the pipes and lit by a spark plug in your tail pipe.
his set up had a 3 way switch for the ignition, up is ignition, down is flame throwers.
he ran a #12 wire from the switch to a coil he had behind both tail lights in the elco
and a short spark plug wire from the coil to spark plugs welded in the tail pipes.
rev up the motor, flip the switch while working the throttle up and down and out the back to be lit up.

cool, but...
every time you do it your washing raw gas down the cylinder wall;
wears out the rings prematurely and dilutes the motor oil with gas.
then when you flip the switch to re-energize your ignition you will backfire and blow the mufflers up.
you need welded mufflers, not crimped.
it will ruin your motor, we put 3 motors in his elco, i offered to pay half of the rebuild if he removed the flame thrower.

a local guy has the car sh-boom, he has propane tanks in his trunk and does this

That looks like a real good way to burn your rig to the ground if you have a propane leak in the trunk.

Yea I don't know about the propane but I want to build it like origs son's car but without having to kill my engine to operate them

Put a relay in the circuit to the extra coils or your going to have to little power to the ignition coil and it may not run.

Is it even remotely possible that there could be too much pressure and blow back into the combustion chamber or back into the propane tank?? I have never been a fan of raw gas in tailpipes or unburned gas in combustion chambers. But I would hold your beer for you when you say "watch this".....

Use a late model HEI ignition module as a separate trigger for your coils. Trigger it off the engine coil. Run a wire from Coil- to HEI pickup coil +. Connect the pickup coil - to ground through a switch. This solves the problem of having too many coils on one set of points and burning up the points too quickly or reducing spark at the plugs and stalling the engine.

Fire at the tailpipe needs fuel and air to burn. Killing half of the cylinders puts fuel and air together ready to burn but blowing them down the exhaust fills the muffler and pipes with an explosive combination just waiting for a trigger. Anyone who's played the game of killing the ignition on a standard trans while rolling in gear then turning the key back on knows just what happens. Even welded mufflers get destroyed after a while. Better to introduce fuel near the rear of the exhaust and make a blowtorch style tip that mixes air and fuel after the tailpipe. I'd go with propane with a manual shutoff valve at the tank and a 12V valve from an RV heater much closer to the exhaust system.

FWIW I've built a system like this and it made big fire and a rumble that could be felt as well as heard.

I was actually going to use propane on mine aswell after talking to dad this weekend. i just want to set up the ignitors so that they don't interrupt engine spark does using the hei pickup do that? and how did you set your nozzles on the propane setup?

Also i am running my exhaust out either side under my running boards on the box and to get the blowtorch tip with a plate welded to the back of the 5in. tips were they reduce to 1.5" would i just drill holes in the plate on the back plate of the tip?

The HEI does do that. It runs as a separate ignition system when turned on.

We had an old "pump up" blowtorch to copy the tip from.

Originally the guys used a manual choke to get a real rich mixture in the tail pipes before throwing the switch on the flame throwers.

They have a few Petronix ignition setups thrown in for good measure with their flame thrower ignitions.
