modified dog dish hubcaps

Here are some pics of the hubcaps on the truck. Bored a 2 5/8 hole on the front ones. I still need to paint the outside ring blue as soon as figure how to do it. Free hand painting I cant do. And tapeing was not working either, so I put them on for now.

Re: modified dog dish hubcaps

Thanks DEISS and leftybass209. The hole looks a lot bigger than it is on the front but it has a black ring seal on the hubcap to keep the dirt out.

If you get a chance could you post up a larger picture of just the front wheel. Id like to see this ring seal set up up close. Truck looks great.

That looks great. I know what you mean about the red ring. I tried taping, and no go. I didn't like the red, either. It was red red,not that orange red

Looks great. Dumb question, could you somehow attach it to something that spins, like a grinder or something? Then when it spins you could just hold the brush in one spot?

Re: modified dog dish hubcaps

Yes CG I will get a close up and post. But all it is, is a small rubber hose like a vacumn hose split down the center and glued on.
And thanks for the compliments guys.. I tried to just pour the paint and let flow but did not flow level. If I can find a aplicator that will make one full revolution without pulling away would work while spinning.

Re: modified dog dish hubcaps

Find someone who does pinstriping (motorcycle shows are a good place to look) and have them free hand it.

Re: modified dog dish hubcaps

Try that green painters tape. Its called frog tape. You can get it at Wal-Mart. Its got what they call paint lock, so the paint cant run or spread. Its what I used to repaint my wheel covers

Re: modified dog dish hubcaps

What's that rubber going to do for trying to remove the hubcap? Not sure why you're concerned with sealing that. Not saying it's a bad idea, but it was never a concern of GM's. I just hope the rubber doesn't make removing the caps difficult

It didn't "lock" the paint when I tried it. But mostly,it didn't cut clean enough (w/sharp Xacto) to not look masked. The factory stencils it and hand painting is the best solution for us,when going paint to paint. Masking works fine on paint to chrome

Special K there was plenty of clearance for it to go on and off and it also covers the edge of the cut metal.

Re: modified dog dish hubcaps

I would mask off the whole area to be striped, then use an Xacto knife to cut out the stripe, maybe rob your wife's kitchen cabinet for a couple bowls that match the size to use to scribe around with your knife.

Yeah,I forgot to mention taping that way. It's cutting masking tape that doesn't work well, especially when going over paint.
