Re: 4l60e + carb engine
Not sure how well the trans will work with the stock PCM and the deleted engine management components. I'll let someone else confirm that. But I've always used aftermarket controllers on carb setups. And the prices on those have come down to the $500-$600 range.
That being said, yes, I only know about the Holley bolt-on TPS (use them myself). There is another version for other carbs that connects to the throttle linkage. They are usually called "remote tps". Search Jegs or Summit. It'll come up. Expensive though. Other alternatives (expensive too): http://www.hgmelectronics.com/produc...ion-sensor-kit This is clever (terrible presentation but good idea):

He was complaining about the stock pcm controlling his gauges not the transmission.

Re: 4l60e + carb engine
A '97 Tahoe will have a CSFI Vortec 5.7L, Not a TBI.

Re: 4l60e + carb engine
Central Sequential Fuel Injection. That's what the L31 Vortec 350's had for the fuel injection system.
I have heard of guys building their own trans controllers by using a '94-'95 TBI PCM, along with a few other components, but there is some work invollved and a learning curve. http://mattw.dyndns.org/4L80E/

Re: 4l60e + carb engine
What Captain said!
You can make the '97 PCM work with a few more input's than a TBI PCM (MAP sensor, CTS, RPM, TPS, VSS), Having the PCM custom tuned is highly recommended. With a little more work.....You can just run the Fuel Injection, The CSFI intake is ugly, A RamJet intake is a bolt in deal with wiring mods. If your dead-set on a carb set-up....Have your 700R4 built with the money selling the 4L60E & what money you spend on getting the "E" shifting & a working speedometer.....Just my opinion. |

Re: 4l60e + carb engine
I think clinebarger is recommending, and I agree, is something like an Edelbrock Pro Flo Intake. Add an eBay throttle body and injector set and you can have a reliable setup for only a little more money than a convoluted carb setup.
edit: Looks like you can get into a Stealth Ram manifold for a little less green.

Re: 4l60e + carb engine
I agree that either the Edelbrock Pro Flo or Holley Stealth Ram would be a big improvement, but I think the OP just looking for a nice reliable driver. In that case I believe the factory injection should work fine.
Sick5, You could run that Vortec 350 with the original injection, and also control the trans at the same time for not much more than controlling just the trans. Basically what you would need to do is have the original wire harness reworked as a standalone harness, have the PCM reflashed, and add a electric fuel pump that will supply the correct psi for the Vortec injection and a return line. If you don't have the factory harness, I believe you can still get aftermarket harnesses.

Re: 4l60e + carb engine
The OP says he has the whole truck. You're right. The cheapest method would be to keep the '97 drivetrain complete. Although the intake gasket is likely leaking
![]() ![]() The harness is not that bad to cut down but would be intimidating to a beginner. I think time and money spent buying a carb, intake, distributor and trying to make that work with an electric trans/module doesn't make much sense.

Thanks I'm not set carb. I just want yo do what's best for me and my wallet. My truck is a daily driver. Ram jet sounds good. But I don't know anything about the mods I would have to do. Or who can tune the pcm |

I would go fuel injection, The PCM doesn't have to be tuned, A VATS box will disable anti-theft http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pr...ions/year/1997. Get some custom tuning later....After the swap is done & kinks worked out. For entry level swappers....Leave the harness on the engine, Use the underhood fuse box that's in the Tahoe. I will go over this in detail if you go this route. It's easy! You will need a high pressure fuel system, The LS forum is full of threads on this. A Ram-Jet manifold is an easy upgrade, Wiring harness mods are required & you need & 8 EV1 injector connectors. |

Re: 4l60e + carb engine
You need a 100 psi fuel pump, The fuel pressure regulator brings it down to around 60 psi.
