re-gearing

I have a set of 4:10 gears that I think I am going to switch to. I am currently running 3:73 w/700r and 26.5" tall tires. My truck isnt driven daily but about 3-4 times a week in the summer, you guys think those gears are going to be to steep? I've done the rpm calcuator I think it should still be ok on the highway, any suggestions?

how about 1/4 change? think It'll be a noticeable difference?

4.10's won't be real bad. I also have 3.73's with a 700R4 which works great. About the biggest problem I see with lower gears is even worse traction than you have now.

If you can plant your rear tires to the ground, more than likely will. But it all depends on where you are wanting to be faster. At the track I would think for sure. On the highway, at top speed, no.

If you can keep it planted, you'll increase your 60' times for sure. You'll most likely help you 1/4 mile time also. Before I switched the gears, I'd have the truck dyno'd. This way you can see where your HP peaks. Ideally you want to shift right at the peek of your power band. Just cause you can turn 6000 rpm, doesn't mean your still making horspower at 6k, usually it'll peak out at about 500-1000 rpm before redline (this will vary, a dyno run will answer this and also whats your ideal launch rpm).....I've dyno'd many drag bikes specifically to find this information. It can make a lot of difference. I had a guy that completely didn't believe what I was showing him on the dyno, finally he came back a couple of month's later and told me that he finally tried and lowered it ET by .2......which was a huge difference at this level.....and all it cost him was 1/2hr on the dyno.....

It'll mostly depend on you setup, which I'm not familiar with, but I would bet it'll help your 1/4 mile ET....

Exactly. Well put.

I don't drag race, but from what I've read and heard, you want to go through the lights with some power left. In other words, you don't want to be redlined with nothing left. You will loose the race.

From stop light to stop light, which will get you tickets if not careful, I think the 4.10's would help a lot. But again, it all has to do with traction. I don't have any traction now, with 3.73's and I know for sure I wouldn't have any with 4.10's. So, I figure, what's the use.

I can't justify ride quality and the expense of having some sort of setup to make good traction. Everytime you do something to make it hook better, ride quality suffers. I finally gave in to the fact these trucks, in order to ride half way decent, are not going to have any traction. You could ride around on some drag radials, but who wants to do this?

As the old saying goes, if you ain't got a lot of motor, you better have a lot of gear.
IMHO, I think those 3.73's are perfect for our trucks. Unless you're running a different intake that NEEDS the gears (Like a Torqer or Vic Jr.) those 4.10's will run your truck outta gear way too fast. I currently have 4.10's, and WITH traction my truck goes into third gear faster than all get out...but of course, I have a TH350. You might be ok with the 700R, because you have that extra gear...BUT, your first gear is gonna be INSANE. (3.68 first gear) If you want ALL OUT DRAG performance, I say go 4.10's, but if you want at least SOME freeway-ability, stay with the 3.73's.

700R4's kick out of OD (4th) at anything over half throttle or less sometimes. There is a valve you can change to make it stay in 4th, like the ones that was used in police cars, but to me, I don't think I want to be driving at the kind of speeds that would be capable then. I think a 1 to 1 ratio is fast enough for me.

I really am a little unsure what I am going to do. I would really like to improve my 1/4 mile times, but no traction sucks. Do I have enough motor to get the full benefit of 4:10's? ( I am running a stock zz4 w/2400 stall). Seems like everyone running these gears has a th350. The guy installing them is only gonna charge me around $50 so I suppose I could try it and If it's too much I could always put the 3:73s back in

4.10's and a 26" tire with a 700R4....I dunno about this one. The 700's first gear is way too deep, I don't think your going to like this combo. I had 3.07 or 3.42 [not sure which ] gears with a SM465 and first gear [actually second] was a 3.somthing gear and I didn't even like that setup.

Ok check it out- with 4.10's, at 5800rpm in 3rd gear you'll be doing 112mph. Sounds about right for a nice 1/4mile pass. So the 4.10's will work good IF [the big if] you can get 1st gear to hook up correctly. If not, your wasting your time and should invest more money in the suspension before you do anything else.

Go for the 4:10's. Heck I'm running 4:56 with a 26 in. tall tire on my Nova. About 4grand at 60mph. Sounds killer!

I'm running 4.11's with a 28" tall tire in my truck. When I go down to a smaller tire, I plan to regear for the smaller tire. If you're sticking with a 26" tire, I would stick with the 3.73's...trust me, if you want traction, it's possible to get it.
