Auto trans preference

I'm getting ready to pick up a trans for my truck. Curious as to your preference,
700r4 or 2004r and why? I think I've made my choice on the 2004r but I'm open to opinions.

Re: Auto trans preference

I haven't any experience with either.
I settled on a th350 to tide me over if I ever decide to get an auto with od.
I have considered both these. I was leaning toward the 2004r because of some of the posts in these forums prefering the shifting of the 2004r over the 700r4.
You can google 700r4 vs 2004r and you'll get lots of hits.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing and what made me decide I'll probably go with the 200. I understand it's supposed to be a stronger trans to begin with and I can get either for within $20 of each other.

Re: Auto trans preference

A stock 200-4R is no where near as strong as a late build 700R4/4L60. Both can be built to strong specs, however.

Re: Auto trans preference

I run a built 200-4R in my Chevelle and a built 700R4 in my C10. They can both be built to handle any reasonable amount of power. People tout the 200-4R as having a better gear ratio spread over the 700R4, but it is not as noticeable as one might think. I like both, really. I think the 700R4 fits a truck better if you plan to do any towing or other truckin' activities. It is inherently stronger and that lower first gear is certainly helpful when you're trying to get a load rolling. However, if you're planning to just use your C10 for scooting around and other hot rod shenanigans, the 200-4R is a good choice. It takes less power to turn, which results in a little more pep. Again, not by any huge margin.

Good luck and have fun!

(Be sure to set the TV cable correctly on which ever trans you choose!)

I'm not sure I agree with that from the research I've done so far but maybe they were talking of the earlier 700s .thanks for the input.

Thanks. It's good to hear from someone that has experience with both and that's kinda what I've gathered. The truck is only going to be a nice street truck. I have a truck to do REAL truck stuff.

I spent a couple of hours reading their information just last week. That's what got me started thinking about the 200. Most places I've checked the 2004r is more expensive for the same set up but Bowtie sells them for less than the 700.
I'm going to a trans builder here in Portland for mine, though. That way if something goes wrong, I'm not paying shipping back and forth for warranty work.
I am impressed by Bowtie's TV set ups and information, though.

Re: Auto trans preference

Both have their pro's and con's. 2004r's fit in smaller spaces and 700r4's are a larger case. 700r4's are more plentiful, but if you get a MD8 case you shouldn't have any issues. I have used 700r4's in several projects over the years, starting with the hydro lock up system and then recently the electronic, vacuum switch, brake switch etc set ups along with adding corvette servo's and everything that trans adapt sold for the internals. The last 2 have been bone stock MD8 cased 700r4's with TCI 4 gear lock up harness and large external coolers. No problems and I beat them with greater loads than I should. Mine don't take the horsepower 200 ish from the built inline and 300ish from previous V8's and the current one, but I tow a lot with them and have no issues once I stopped modifying the internals and just stuck with the improved MD8 case newer ones.

Re: Auto trans preference

I have the 2004r in my truck and really like it. built by gear star. everything came with the trans-- trans fluid ,mount to dipstick and bolts and cooler. I didn't have to buy anything. trans is built for 400hp. and they match you're tire size and gear ratio to get the speedo calibrated. I like the closer ratio of 1st to 2nd gear better than the 700. just my 2cents. also they are almost the same size as a powerglide or t350 so no driveshaft work.
