Timing question
I put a crate 350 with Edelbrock 2101 manifold. 1406 carb and rebuilt HEI distributor into my truck. I got the brackets and harmonic balancer from a 74 350 in a junkyard. I timed it to 8 BTDC and it ran, but not very well. I read the post by Gordo on Friday and hooked up a vacuum gauge. It showed 14 " of vacuum. I turned the distributor to maximize the vacuum and got 24". It runs great, runs cooler and uses less gas, accelerates well. I checked the timing with a light and the timing mark is up under the water pump. I timed it with the vacuum advance plugged and the timing pickup on #1 (front on driver's side).What did I do wrong ?

What did the damper come off of? You may have a damper from the old style where the pointer is under the water pump, and have a timing chain that has the pointer off to the side. Or vise-versa. Bring the motor to TDC, and see whare it is all lining up, then you can mark the real TDC if it is off. Your outer riung on the damper could have slipped free too.
Something else to consider, some engines don't work by common theory. I had a 350 with high compression and little tiny valves (crappy 305 heads) and that thing would ouly run with the static compression set at 1 degree [i]AFTER[/1] TDC. A retarded engine. My damper may have slipped too, but it sure didn't look like it. These freak things normally only happen when your combo is all messed up and shoulda never been put together in the first place. (like my old 350) ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. The balancer if off a 74. How can I find TDC without using the timing mark ?

pull the # 1 plug, and turn the motor over by hand, holding yout thumb over the plug hole. NOTE...do not use small finger, it can get sucked in. You may have to turn it over a couple times, but when the air starts blowing by your finger, then you know it is coming up on TDC. Keep turning it untill the air stops coming out. Then, use a small screwdriver (thin and long) or something, and slip it into the plug hole. You should feel the top of the piston. Turn the engine untill the csrew driver is at it's highest point. That will be TDC. Then look at the damper.
