Re: Anyone over 6ft driving these trucks?

Add washers under the brackets. It will raise the seat to give you more room. Tilt is necessary or the steering wheel is in your gut!!

6'1'' and 230 here. Plenty of room. I don't really have a belly to hit the steering wheel.

For me it's not a seat height issue, rather a clostrofobic feeling of being too close to the dash. I need to add about 3-4" to the cab length. Too bad you can't do that with washers!

Re: Anyone over 6ft driving these trucks?

I'm 6'3" and I seem to fit just fine the steering wheels close but doens't bother me enough to go through the hassle of shortening the steering column, I mean I cant really slouch down all G' like but im not by any means cramped at all.

Re: Anyone over 6ft driving these trucks?

I'm used to Cadillacs so I always notice the lack of leg room in my pickups and I'm only 5'10. When I broke my leg 20 years ago and had a full leg cast I had to sell my Chevy pickup and buy a Dodge. It was only temporary though and I sold the Dodge when I got better. Dodges do have quite a bit more room though. I see big guys in compact cars all the time so I guess some people are just used to being cramped and don't notice it. This is why I don't put a Cadillac seat in my truck because I know I will lose too much leg room.

i would think you would hate them they are much higher than the original trucks. also i posted how to shorten the column on another thread today. steering wheel for fat guys is the thread. that and a smaller wheel would make these trucks easier to set in. the cab itself is no worse than a newer truck. in fact these trucks are wider in the cab and the dash is not as in your face either. for some reason though gm made the column way to long and used a little large wheel. i guess its more of the trucks hadnt changed so much and the cars had. if you ever driven a mid 60s car you get the same feeling. im guessing ppl werent as fat or as tall/had shorter arms or they just loved the steering wheel real close to them. one thing i do to classic cars is shorten the column some other than that they have much more room and are just set up better inside than a new car. the square trucks though have to be worst ive been in for the wheel to close to the driver feel.

Re: Anyone over 6ft driving these trucks?

6'5", 250 here. My 85 regular cab is my daily driver. It's not the most relaxing interior in the world, but it's not so irritating that I feel the need to change it.

I agree with some of the folks in here that expectations in driving positions have changed in recent years. Most 60s-70s-80s cars had large skinny steering wheels basically in your chest. My first car was a 66 Caddy Coupe de Ville, and it didn't have much more room in the front seat than my 85 truck does today. I recently sold my 69 Chevelle, which had a bench seat that always felt flat on the floor to me. A smaller diameter steering wheel made the Chevelle a lot better for me.

When I drive the wife's Yukon, I have legroom and elbow/arm room, but my head is scraping the roof.

Re: Anyone over 6ft driving these trucks?

Are fixed columns a different length than tilt? I have tilt and it's been yeaaaars since I drove a fixed column truck.

Wanna hear something funny? I adjust my tilt wheel maybe three times a year...it's default position is straight.

Re: Anyone over 6ft driving these trucks?

I almost prefer a straight column and they are harder to steal. The lock rod goes down the top not the side like a tilt.

Re: Anyone over 6ft driving these trucks?

6'2" and about 290. But I'm built like a gorilla: long arms, long torso, stubby legs. So it feels like the steering wheel is in my chest, and pushing on the top of my legs. The good part is that I have plenty of head room. Probably because I'm squishing the seat.

the 84 i had had tilt and the camo one at work is not i cant tell a difference in room. again shortening i think is the best thing to do to them. i would have my 84 if i kept it. i will when ever i get another sqaure. im 5' 11" and 215lbs and i still feel the wheel is 2 close.

Re: Anyone over 6ft driving these trucks?

6' and 240. The original setup put me too close to the wheel. I made several mods and now have plenty of room.

When I picked up my '80 swb, standard cab a while back, it had a custom truck/van seat in it that had 2 large buckets and a folding console. The seats were worn out and the frame was mounted poorly. I picked up a stock bench seat just for the frame - I wanted to use the stock mount points and slider brackets. I mounted the custom seat frame (which had independent sliders for each seat) to the stock frame and mounted a pair of '03 Jetta buckets - way too tall. My head hit the roof.

After a couple more tries, I ended up cutting/welding the stock mounting brackets to the custom frame (eliminated the stock bench slider, kept the custom independent sliders) and bolted that all in with the buckets. I now have a ton of leg room, infinite tilt on the back of the seats and seats are very comfortable. In fact, I still have about 3-4" of travel going back on the sliders - plenty of room.

I also ditched the stock column for a tilt version and put in a smaller wheel. Now I feel I have plenty of room. I even had my buddy, who is 6'5" & 300 lbs, drive it and he had plenty of room.

Re: Anyone over 6ft driving these trucks?

I am 5' 11". But I have long legs. As stated early in the thread the 90's truck seat really made a big diffrence for me. It lowered the seat and moved the rear of the seat back .The seat is not as thick . Made a lot more room for me. It worked great.
