1st Time Build - Lower Ball Joint
Hey guys, I'm in the process of assembling a rolling chassis for mock up. My question has to do with the lower ball joints. Obviously to fully mock the truck up I need to install the lower ball joints into the lower a-arms, but can they be safely removed for when I need to get everything painted/powder coated?
At this point, all parts are raw steel (PorterBuilt ) Thanks for any input. |

Yes, just press them in and out carefully. I'd probably grease or anti seize them for now just to ease the process and prevent sticking.

Re: 1st Time Build - Lower Ball Joint
I talked to a local shop here and they advise to either powder coat/paint them(a arms) first, or buy a second set of ball joints. They don't like pressing the same set in, then out, then back in.
Any thoughts??? |

Have them powder coated with them in. The powder coater should be able to mask them.

The oven will melt the boots. If it was me, I would powder the arms, sand the powder off where the joint gets pressed, install the joints and then masking tape the entire arm so it doesn't get scratched when mocking up your build.

Re: 1st Time Build - Lower Ball Joint
Most powdercoat shops won't coat and bake any part that has a greased subassembly (like a balljoint) because during the baking process, the high temperatures (400 degrees) will cause the grease will liquify and contaminate the coating.

ah I did not know about the grease and would have left the boots off until after.

Re: 1st Time Build - Lower Ball Joint
Well I looked into this a bit more and found that there might be a few options. I found some will clean the grease out of the ball joint before powder coating, then grease it back up after. I even found some that left the boot on saying that 400 degrees did not effect it ( I don't think I would try that).
I have a friend that operates a powder coating business I will ask him for his thoughts next time I see him |
