1984-85 rear axle in 1968 Pick up
I might be able to buy a junk 1984-85 chevy with 5 lug axles. Will they fit my 68 stepside with a 307 and 3 on the tree?
Thanks-Mika |

68 axles are narrower than 84-85

Re: 1984-85 rear axle in 1968 Pick up
I just did this entire swap in my 67. The axle housing is 1.5" wider than the 67-68 axle housing so the axles themselves wont fit in the 68 housing. My truck was trailing arm so I had to cut all the pads and brackets off of the 80's axle housing and make pads to weld on for the trailing arms and I had to relocate the track bar but it fit nicely and was a better ratio than the posi I removed. I need to rebuild the posi and replace the axles the previous owner attempted to redrill. For about 260.00 plus tax I could have bought 5 lug conversion axles from summit but the posi unit Needs clutches and the 4:10 ratio was bad with the th350 in the truck. I will rebuild it and use it in a different project.

I did the same as OLDTRUCKFANATIC BUT with a 3.42 of a suburban 90s and I had to buy the brackets that hold the trailing arms at classic performance CPP, they cost about $50.
Also I had to modify the manual brake cable. |

Several companies make a kit to put that axle in your truck I think they are normally less than $150 maybe much less. Your ratio choices would be a bunch greater if you did do that and consider that swap, it has been done many many times.

Right: I just took a look on the classic performance products catalogue and yes the kits start on $129 and works with 73-87 rear ends. they use to sell only the trailing arm axle seats that's why only paid about $50
