Column mounted turn signal switch

So, I've been messing around with my stock turn signal switch that is a cable actuated unit on the steering column, under the dash.
These seem a little problematic as I've had to replace it twice. Am I missing something here or is this the reason everyone moves to the external, column mounted type like the one pictured below?

Thanks,
Scott

Don't see too many switch to the Signal Stat type.
You can, however just change out to a '63-66 column. Those switches are easily available and dependable.

I guess I should've mentioned it's a '61. I'll look at the 63-66 switches. Thanks!

Dumb question here...can a 1961 steering wheel be used with 63-64 column?
