'74 Rear Axle Application - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

The '74 K10 I bought last fall has had the rear axle swapped to an 8-lug, full-floating 14-bolt - FWIW, the front is a 6-lug Dana 44. The truck was originally a 454/auto with HD springs - would this have come with a 10 bolt from the factory, or a 12 bolt semi-float 6-lug? Also, as far as spring perches, shock mounts, etc. go, will a 10 or 12 bolt axle out of any 73-87 10 or 20 series truck bolt up to the K10 rear suspension?

If it was a 74' K10, you would have had the factory 12 bolt semi-floater when it was new. They started using the 10-bolt rear later on (don't know when). I believe any year 12 bolt should fit, just make sure the gear ratios match the front axle.

The shock mount brackets are different between a 2wd and 4x4 axle. It's only a slight difference.

Also, the axle lengths are slightly different between the 2wd and 4x4. I've interchanged them in the past and it seemed to work ok.

Ah! I see. Good to know. The mount holes for the shock studs on the frame have been moved down about 3 in. - maybe they figured out after the swap that the mounts are different, but compensated on the other end.
