Camaro Gas Tank??

Has anyone used a 2000 Camaro gas tank between the frame rails? I'm wondering if it will fit. It came from a Z28 and I am waiting on delivery.

Re: Camaro Gas Tank??

I pulled a fuel tank out of a '95 Firebird convertible- it doesn't look like it will fit without some surgery, but the convert tank might not be the same as a coupe. Rough measurements don't bode well. This one has a nice 36K mi. LT1/4L60E combo, though.

Re: Camaro Gas Tank??

Thanks for the info Critter, I already have the 2000 tank ordered. I will see what I have to do to work it out. I first bought an Alum. tank from a board vendor, then decided I needed to put the pump in the tank. Seems like I keep going the wrong way on this project.

Heard my wife telling someone the other day, "he's going to have a nice $4,000 truck if he ever finishes it, problem is he'll only have about $45,000 in it". (If she only knew.)

Re: Camaro Gas Tank??

What made you choose that tank? Do you have any dimensions on it? Seems like it would be a nice unit for those switching to EFI if it fits.

Re: Camaro Gas Tank??

I chose that tank after deciding to use a gen III 5.7 from a 1999 Z28. I had already bought (still have) the aluminum tank and ordered an intank fuel pump for it. When the pump arrived it would not fit in the alum tank. So, I decided to get a tank that was designed for the engine. My next problem will be adding new exhaust w/cats, etc.

Re: Camaro Gas Tank??

I have one in mine, had to trim an inch off each inside rail, cut a hole in passenger side rail for fuel filler and build brackets. If you plan on making this a NICE truck I would put in the aluminum tank. I used an 02 donor Camaro myself, started out to be just a low budget build but ended up going a lot farther, $$$$$. It works fine but I wish I'd spent the money on an aluminum tank. I can post or email pics if you want, I have several.

Re: Camaro Gas Tank??

Yeah, Sinker, I can relate to your "wound up going a lot further" comment.
As I said I already have the aluminum tank AND a new intank pump/sending unit that doesn't fit the alum tank. So I've just put that aside. I just thought the Camaro tank could be made to look better than the aluminum. Plus it would solve gathering fuel pumps that work w. the gen III etc. I guess I will need to figure out guages though.
I just need time to work on it.

Re: Camaro Gas Tank??

I made a tank cover to hide it, you can see it in my build. I used the Camaro for several parts (engine, trans, pcm, gauge cluster, rear view mirror, rear sway bar, radiator and fans, gas tank and pump, cruise control) so there are lots of parts to use if you want to do the modifications.

Why do you want/need exhaust with cats?

Sorry if I misunderstood your question. I intend to try to set the engine, transmission, fuel and exhaust system up as close to stock for the Camaro as possible. I will need to catalytic converters an O2 sensors in the system.

Re: Camaro Gas Tank??

The ECU can (should) get reprogrammed to accommodate your requirements- it is well worth the effort to do so. Check out the LSx swap FAQ on the forum. It answers most, if not all questions about late model engine swaps in these trucks.

Re: Camaro Gas Tank??

Yeah your PCM has to be modified by someone to disable the security system, otherwise the engine will never start. So when they do that for you, you can have them turn of the monitors for the rear oxygen sensors so that you will not have to have catalytic converters or rear oxygen sensors.

Angry Re: Camaro Gas Tank??

Uh-Oh! I didn't realize all that re-programming would be necessary. You say 'someone' would need to reprogram. What kind of person would that likely be? If it is going to remove the need for the converters, I'm pretty sure a dealer or a regular tune up shop would not do it. Or, maybe it is not required because of the age of the vehicle?

I'm realizing every day just how dumb I really am.

I surely appreciate your bringing this up, maybe if I don't need O2 sensors or converters I might save a buck.

Re: Camaro Gas Tank??

I'm sure you can find someone nearby with hp tuners or send your pcm off to someone for reflash. There is a lot of work to do to your harness also, spend some time on lsx swap section and youll find everything you need to do.
