16x10 wheels fit on a 1971 K-10
I have a 1971 K-10 4x4 1/2 ton 6 lug with disc brakes. I am installing a 4" lift kit and I am looking at a set of 16x10 wheels with 4.5" backspacing. Will these wheels fit without rubbing on any of the drivetrain components? Wheel outlets only show 15" wheels available for this year (I suspect because that is factory specs.) LMC has 16x10 6 lug wheels for sale but notes that they will not fit 4wd.
Anyone running 16s? will they fit without issues? Thanks. |

10” is a ridiculous wide wheel. How big of tires you plan on running to need such a wide wheel? 8” wide are ideal for the typical tire you would use under a 4” lift.

I plan on running 33x12.50 tires. I like the deep dish look of the 10' wheel.

Won't rub on the drive train with that backspacing. But they will stick out wide. Definitely deep dish. 33" tires on a 10" wide wheel can look a little funny, like the wrong proportions. Also that really negative offset from the centerline will wear out bearings and ball joints faster as well as give you worse handling as the centerline of the wheels will be further out from the steering axis.

Re: 16x10 wheels fit on a 1971 K-10
In fact, 10" is the correct wheel width for a 12.50-width tire. You shouldn't have any fitment issues with a 4" lift. The truck might actually look better with 35/12.50s instead of 33s, but the taller tires might have minor clearance problems.
Back to your 33-12.50s on 10" wheels. I'm running 33/12.50-16.5s on 9.75 wheels, with 2.5" Softrides. No problems at all, but my front fenders were notched many years ago to clear a different wheel/tire combo (before the Softrides). Just eyeballing it, I don't think there would be any problems even if the fenders weren't notched. You should be fine with your 4" lift. Plenty of guys run 33s on 8" wheels, which is a bit narrow but it seems to work okay. Upside is they won't stick out as far up front, and your bearings will be happier.

Re: 16x10 wheels fit on a 1971 K-10
They'll fit fine. You have the same axle as a K/20 which would require 16" wheels to clear calipers. 4.5" backspace on a 10" wheel is only .5" off center,so no ill affects from excessive offset. Us old timers all ran 10" nominal width wheels with 12" nominal width tires. Only more recently has the school of thought turned to running 8" with that width tire. If you look at recommendations you will see 8-10" wheel,so simply a matter of taste. You will throw more slop up on your truck with 10s. But the actual tread will be under the top of the wheel openings. An 8" wheel with a 10.50 tire is the same proportion and anything less is getting too narrow. The wider the tire the more variation allowed.

Re: 16x10 wheels fit on a 1971 K-10
I agree that the 33" tire will fit on a 10" wide wheel just fine. But trust me the proportions look a little funny. I used to run these on my bronco on a 10" wheel.
However a 10" wide wheel is actually 11" edge to edge. So a 4.5" offset is actually 1" from the centerline. Also you will note that stock steelies would have a positive offset, putting the wheel centerline closer to the steering axis. So 1" negative offset is even further away than what the engineers designed for. I know I didn't like the extra offset when I had wheels with 4.625" of backspace. But it will work! Just my two cents.

Re: 16x10 wheels fit on a 1971 K-10
I'm just speaking from experience. I never experienced any negative effects/premature wear from offset with the various vehicles I've run 10" on,nor have heard of any from the scores of people I've known to run them. It's truly just a matter of preference and, more recently,8" is most preferred, including me. The whole purpose of wider track wheels and tires was floatation, and that is what the proportions say to me. My '85 Jimmy runs 10" wheels (originally on my '91 Burb) because the most off road use it sees is on the beach=flotation/no snow. In my case,I run various sets of wheels/tires for various uses to run between my 8-lug trucks.
These are going on my '72...8.25 x 16.5s with 37/12.50 SSRs. They will allow less lift and give the (a lot) beefier than stock look I'm after. But,I also have a set of 9.75 x 16.5 aluminum slots with 35/12.50 BFG A/Ts for flotation and '70s era custom look

I dig those SSRs! I would have bought a set if they weren't so stinking expensive. Let us know how you like them once you start driving on them.

Re: 16x10 wheels fit on a 1971 K-10
This will give you and idea of what it will look like. I have a 2.5" lift and the rims are rockcrawler 16X10. The tires are Intero TRXUS 33/12.50/16.
I have gone back to the ford steel rims and 285/75/16 tires. I had some rub on the front fender when turning, and since this truck is not a hiway queen I was afraid of tearing up my fenders and tires. I also did not like the wide stance look. I still like tall skinny tires on these old trucks. No worries about the wide tires and rims......I've got an old blazer I use for hunting that they are going on.

And jrdv, that's about what I want once I'm done with the bigger stuff,2"-4" lift with maybe 255/85s or 285/75s on Ford wheels or 4" lift,35/10.50s on 8". Here's one with about 4" lift,285/75s,and Ford 7" wheels:
