Picked up an 85 longbed parts truck with sport wheels and glide out spare tire carrie

This is not a for sale post. Just got back into town. Once I get settled in a some parts off I will post them in the classifieds. Drove 5 and 1/2 hours today to California to pick up a 79 GMC step side short bed and an 85 fleet side long bed. Both are rust free . The GMC doesn't have a rear axle so we will be pulling the one out of the 85 and bring it back to CA when we pick up the GMC. Just too hard to get it onto a trailer without an axle. The 85 will be parted out. It has white sport wheels and a glide out spare tire carrier. The guy also threw in enough parts to fill 2 pickup beds. I will have the 85 home tomorrow and post some pictures up. It was a long drive but couldn't beat the price!

Some times it's better to buy a whole car/truck, than to buy a bunch of parts! If you have the room to part something out, I recommmend it Sounds like a good score!

It was a good score! Dirt cheap as the guy had 5 acres is stuff and was selling his house. This is only the second set of white 5 lug sport wheels I have ever found. We will be spraying down the whole under carriage on the white truck with penetrating oil so it has a chance to work in on the 5 hour road trip home today. I want it to come apart as easily as possible! Truck was kind of a weird truck. Pretty loaded but was a non a/c Silverado. The GMC is just a Sierra Grande. Being in the parts business I have been wanting to part trucks out for years and the Silverado will be my first . It is a CA truck and I bought it with a bill of sale only due to back registration fees

When you part out whole trucks, you get a bunch of non premium parts also. I was thinking you had it better by just grabbing the good stuff at the wrecking yards and leaving the rest behind while I have to pull all of the non premium parts off of my trucks and try to sell them.

These trucks were so cheap that I couldn't pass them up! I am going to start hauling rust free sheet metal to the Midwest and east coast so I figured this was a good place to start. I don't feel bad scrapping the non sellable stuff! I like selling just the premium stuff but I get a lot of requests for other items. For what I bought these two trucks for I couldn't have bought the premium parts off them at a wrecking yard!

I thought that you would have gone after the crew on c/l for $900 looks a little rough but seems like a good parts truck.

Pictures are now up. There is more than I posted but this is most of it. I won't have the GMC home until next week but I am probably keeping it for myself. I am pretty partial to the pre 81 GMCs and this one is a dual tank truck.

Tom, I didn't see it but these trucks were such a good deal as they had a really good sum of parts. The 85 was well optioned and the stepside is a shortbed dual tank truck and both are completely rust free so it was just a good deal. I think I am going to work on hauling sheetmetal/trucks back east and the Midwest if there is a good market for it.

There is a market for it I believe as long as one doesn't get too crazy with prices. When I was looking for a rest free cab and bed there were two different guys that prices of $2400 for a cab and $1750 for a bed. I think that is a bit much, granted they were rust free but still.

They look good to me. Not sure what you ended up having to pay but I don't think you could have gone wrong. Did they throw in the flat tire for free?

It would be interesting to know what stuff actually SELLS for. There are plenty of people here trying to get stupid prices for stuff as well. I was thinking closer to $1000-1200 for a bed and around the same for a cab if I have to deliver them. It would really just depend on logistics and how much stuff I was bringing in one load on what I would have to price it at. I had also considered bringing nice rust free rollers out. Just need to look into it a bit more.

Sounds like I should pack my duffle bags with money and go to Arizona and give you some competition

I have the twin to your 85. It also has a gang of back DMV fees.

Not really sure what the prices are around here as not many people are going west or south anymore to bring loads back up. I think there is a need for it just no one is doing the work of getting goods back here. I know I paid 750 for the cab that had come up from Texas.

There are still some people that I catch at the gas station from time to time that are from further north. They always come back with a trailer full of beds stood up on end and usually a bed full of doors. Sometimes the truck and trailer is nothing but doors, fenders, etc. These guys go down and bring them back and sell from their location where as you would be bringing here and not sure how you would go about selling them. Not sure how you would go about finding some midwest contacts to maybe sell your load to and then they could resell.

Re: Picked up an 85 longbed parts truck with sport wheels and glide out spare tire ca

I appreciate everyone's input! Hope I can make this work out one way or another. I have wanted to part out trucks for a while and it is a good way to save some money on the stuff I need for my own vehicles. I forgot to mention that the stepside is dual tanks which is pretty hard to come by on these.

Roy, I had thought about that too. I do have my sister and brother in law in Kentucky so that may be an option as well. I am not against finding someone that wants to purchase a load and resell for themselves either. I have a friend with a permanent spot at the Carlisle Swap in PA that he said I could have so that is an option as well. I have always wanted to go there and check it out.
