So I finally finished installing the engine into the 94 K1500 (only to find the transmission is smoked) so I was able to pull it out of the shop and open up a bay. So I figure its time to work on the 84 K10 again. It has a tough time starting due to the carburetor being tired. So I plan on pulling the manifold/carb and installing new. The q-jet thats in it has an electric choke (and a choke light illuminates on the dash), but there is also a choke cable inside that I can pull. I usually have to use the cable to get the truck to idle long enough to run on its own. Is this normal or has something been changed do you think? It used to be a Sheriffs truck. Im just unsure if I should get a carb with electric choke or manual.

my 86 has 2 wires that lead up to the choke and only one wire is plugged into the choke. i accidently pulled the wire off and didnt relize i plugged in the other wire. when i turned the key on the choke light came on. i went back and swapped the wires and the choke light went off. if you have 2 wires check which one has 12 volts to it and plug into the choke and it should make you choke light go off. it did on mine.

Well the choke light only comes on for a little bit and then turns off. I think I just need to pull the truck in and take some pictures, and trace the wires and so forth. Id like to end up just pulling all the wires and install a painless kit. Im not even sure the "choke" cable goes to the choke, I believe it connects to the throttle lever, almost like you are able to adjust and hold idle rpm say to run a winch or lots of lights. Again Im not sure since it was a sheriffs truck and not a general assembly line truck.
