HI
So saw an AD that to me is quite stunning on hotroddirtys.com main page.. this one which was taken down to metal and left that way. Would love something like this but what do you need to start with...a perfect cab? How did they get the panels so nice looking as Ive seen others taken down to metal with all kinds of swirls. Is it just in how you do it.

What do you need to maintain this?

Someone here a few years ago did an AD burb in baremetal. "swirls" are left by rough sanding discs, you would need to gradually use finer grades to get rid of them. Any patching metal would need to be from the same metalurgy (era) to patch. Once finished you could use a flat clear to preserve the finish. If you live in a high humidity area, or with just routine washing, moisture will find its way into unprotected nooks and crannys and eventually show. There is a reason the rat rod and patina guys finish the cars the way they do.

Then expect to spend several hours every week working to keep it that way.

Bringing your just finished metal work out in bare metal to a major local event to show off your skills and craftsmanship is something in it's self if you take it back to the shop and blow it apart to do the final finish and paint work. running it in bare metal year after year doesn't cut it in my book and is far more work for the owner if he keeps the bare metal shiny than painting it. So ask yourself if you are up to the task of keeping it up week after week even when it is in the garage for the winter because bare metal rusts there too and fairly quickly.

Use Gibbs oil on to pater it's done. That stuff is amazing.

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
