I had a similar problem on my 65 SS which has the same PS bracket as yours. When I installed the 400 SBC with an 8" diameter damper I ended up grinding the bracket just enough for clearance as it looked like the bracket would be strong enough after I removed the material. I reworked the bracket in 1993 and the car has been driven on a regular basis during the summer since then without any problems.
This may not be the best solution but it works for me and no one ever notices the bracket at the many car shows the car is entered into. Jim
