Steering Joint question

on a 1966 c10, i know the rag joint is bolted to the splines on the steering gear, but is the top plate of that rag joint pressed onto the steering shaft or is it on there with a set screw. The front of my truck hit a bridge during a recent snow storm and the holes on that plate that fasten to the rag joint are sheared. i need to replace that entire piece. the new rag joints i am seeing online have are attached to the shaft with a set screw but im not seeing that on the original, any one ever replaced this?

Re: Steering Joint question

The rag joint bolts to that plate which is pressed and welded to the steering shaft as a one piece part all the way to the steering wheel. To replace, you'd have to grind off the weld that is securing it and then press it off the shaft.. This is not normally a replacement part and never seen one with a set screw securing it. Only the aftermarket u-joints have the set screws, as far as I know.

Re: Steering Joint question

Like tincan said, it's all one piece from the steering wheel down to the flange at the steering box.

Now, if you're in a fixin mood and don't mind some work, here's how I did one.

Take a steering shaft from a 73-87 truck and cut the end off.

Cut it short and drill holes in it

Then, cut the wasted end off your original one piece steering shaft and slide the new end over it. Bolt it to the box to determine length and weld it thoroughly. I did six plug welds and welded it circumferentially on the top end.

It ain't sexy but it was cheap and easy.
