700r4 vss and cable
I am currently installing a 5.7L TBI and 700r4 out of 87 chevy into 66 chevy truck. I am using the 87 computer and wiring harness. I have searched the forum but cannot seem to find an answer to these questions.
1.) my 87 donor truck has a green box and two wires run to the speedometer. Is there a way to use that sensor in the stock 66 head? Or is the only option a Jags 2prs? 2.) If I go with the stock speedo what cable do I ask for at the parts counter? The 87 has a slip on at speedo head and the 66 has a threaded end by the head. The cable ends at the transmission appear different between the 2 as well. Thanks everyone for any help you can give me. Last edited by Hotrod1952; 03-23-2014 at 07:20 AM. |

Okay I figured this one out. Found out you need a cable for a 72 chevy truck with a 350 transmission and the 87 cable has a plastic adapter slid over the square end of the cable at the trans end.

Re: 700r4 vss and cable
Just to add - you may want to still use the VSS connection to the ECM as it helps control the lockup on the 700R4.
I also recommend(from experience) that you use the Park/Neutral switch -this IS NOT the same as a neutral safety switch. It will have orange/blk and a blk/white wires going to it. This tells the ECM when you are in park and will reduce the high idle time on start up. without it you can sometimes get false fault codes(CEL on) I am assuming you know that you will need the brake light switch from the donor, as well? I am running a 1991 TBI 305 with a Painless harness. I am currently running a TH350C trans. |

Re: 700r4 vss and cable
The vss will also trigger the ecm to switch to eco mode and take engine out of idlemode.
The jtr vss isnt a bad price. However you should be able to make the original vss work. There is also a wiring and pressureswitch kit for the 2004r and 700r4 lockups. I researched the same thing for an s10 v8 swap about a year ago.

Re: 700r4 vss and cable
Since I have the factory 87 column installed I will use both switches neutral and park as they are already in place. Also I ordered the Jags vss I assume I can just hook it to the Speed sensor input the green box ran to. I also plan to try and retro in the gauges(oil, volt & temp) into the stock 66 gauge panel in place of the 66 ones. The Fuel gauge I am going to leave the stock 66 one and install a 30 Ohm sender on the fuel inject level/pump unit. I have a late 80's blazer or suburban tank I am hoping to make fit in the back where the spare tire was.
