Seat Belt Buckle Styles

After a trip to the wrecking yard today, I am very confused.

My '84 has the chrome metal seat belt buckles, but at the wrecking yard was an '83 that had the plastic buckles that were burgundy (interior color).

I'm in need of the plastic retractor covers and buckle sleeves, because mine are shot. Apparently, in order to get the covers, I have to replace the whole seatbelt.

My question is, what year did the seat belt buckle style change? Therefore, I know what years to look for at the wrecking yards...
