Angry Replacing window glass (drivers door)

Last year I put a new glass and power window motor in my '89 suburban, and I thought it was pretty easy.

The glass shattered in my '87 GMC, which has crank windows.
I took the glass out of a door I was going to junk. I have been fighting it for 2 days now. I even unbolted the regulator assembly but still can't get the rollers to go in their tracks.

The window is in the door track though, and slid up all the way because it's been raining.

If anybody knows the trick to this, let me know

Re: Replacing window glass (drivers door)

you need to make the vent window moveable to get it in

Re: Replacing window glass (drivers door)

I followed the steps in the video. The glass is in but it rolls hard both ways. I lubed the tracks but it still doesn't roll the greatest. I think my regulator is bent and the big gear drags on the housing.

Re: Replacing window glass (drivers door)

Interested as well on your progress and this topic. The video is worth bookmarking.

My driver's side vent window pivot shaft snapped at the base of it. Going to have to replace when I find one and the weather stripping will probably be replaced at the same time.

Good luck on your window. Took the door panel off once & looked in there at the window mechanism and imagine if it is bent just a little it could create problems.

Yet with no experience in it at this time, pure speculation sits beside my common sense awaiting the wisdom of someone who has "been there done that" to share.

Re: Replacing window glass (drivers door)

If you replaced your weatherstripping, the glass may not slide up and down very well until the glass seats itself. My glass wouldn't move up and down for at least a few days until the new rubber formed. Now it's peachy. At first I thought my new window motor was a dud!

Re: Replacing window glass (drivers door)

Also, you don't have to remove the vent window in order to remove the window glass. Just remove the lower 9/16" bolts that hold the track in place on each side to allow it some play.

Get some urethane adhesive for glass...that has replaced most other methods of installing any auto glass

Re: Replacing window glass (drivers door)

Don't mean to hijack but how much do you think it would cost to have someone replace the rubber on all four sides? I'm painting the truck but never worked with window rubber before and need help. Anyone in dallas willing to spend a saturday with me?

Re: Replacing window glass (drivers door)

I need to know how to install the glass on the drivers side door. I rebuilt the vent windows and they work good. I replaced all channels and rubbers on the inside of the door. The vent window is in and I can't get the glass to go in. I have scratched the paint so I will have some touch up to do. How do you get the glass in the door?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

This is how I install glass on doors equipped with manual regulators. It has been a long time since I have messed with power regulators in a Square.

With the vent window assembly out of the door and the the lower retainer bolt out of the the bottom of the opposite track, roll the regulator all the way up. The rollers will extend up into the opening. Slide the glass onto the rollers and carefully roll down the window. When the window is all the way down slide the glass towards the latch side of the door as far as you can without the glass falling off of the track. Install the vent window assembly. Slide the glass towards the vent window track. Align the lower latch side track and install retainer bolt. Test the window for smooth operation making any adjustments as necessary.

Hope this helps.

Chris
