v grove vs flat belt
I have a 70's motor and I want to know? Will a 1996 flat belt system work on my motor. It has all the mounts and alt and ac and balancer still attached to the engine. I don't want to take mine off unless it will bolt on my engine. both are 350 engine.

Yes, this is a very common mod, and well worth the effort. The brackets very a little by year so you need the entire system off the same vehicle, including the reverse flow water pump. Don't recall anyone saying they wish they had not done it. Car Craft did a nice article a few years ago and it can still be found on their web site.

Re: v grove vs flat belt
I swapped all pulleys/brackets off my 92 5.7 onto my 70s sbc. All the bolts in the heads were the same and very easy swap. I ran v belt on my big block for break in and the belt kept slipping and squeaking. Long story short I will only run serpentine from here forward

The older 4.3 V-6 mounts work also. I have a whole setup I bought back a few years ago I never used. Yes make sure you get the whole setup from which ever truck you get the parts from.

The really cool thing would be a old 230/250/292 with a modern serpintine system. Not sure if it's possible but it would be neat.

Re: v grove vs flat belt
I'm running a 90 camaro setup on mine because I wanted the alt & compressor spread out wider than the truck setup. if your pass side head only has two holes instead of three like the later heads you can drill and tap the third hole, I didn't because the camaro bracket bolts to the head and block and is stout enough without the third bolt in the head.

Re: v groove vs flat belt
I have a 15 year old GM crate motor in my 1970. All the front end goodies you see in the photo came from a 1996 C-10 donor. In 1996, GM replaced the pancake style compressor with the HT6 that you see in my truck. Everything bolts right up to my old 350 but there is one threaded boss(?) that is missing from the block casting where one bolt for the steel power steering/engine lift-out bracket is missing on the earlier engine blocks (see 2nd photo). This is not a big a big deal-I just won't use this bracket to tie to if if I ever need to pull my motor.

Re: v grove vs flat belt
It's worthy to note that I was able to use the top radiator hose for the 1996 but I had to get a swiveling thermostat housing to make it line up and then cut the hose down just a bit on one end. It was also necessary to get a radiator shop to the modify the lower hose outlet on my radiator and I had to use a stainless universal hose for the lower radiator. I used the 1996 PS pump and had the hose swapped out with fittings that worked with my original style steering box. To use the high output, one wire alternator from the 1996, I had to wire in a resistor in the wiring harness (forgot the details but I'm sure there is lots of info here on one wire alternator swaps). I just got my A/C going a couple of months ago...there were a few challenges here with swapping out hose fittings.

Re: v grove vs flat belt
This is where I got my set-up. One of the best upgrades I have made to my '70 350.
