Re: How to do burnout with sm465 transmission?

The thing about the rear end spider gears is that if one tire hooks up, all of the sudden all of the power is traveling through the spider gear to the tire that's still spinning. You've got one tire going zero mph and the other going like hell. The spider gears really aren't intended for that kind of abuse since they don't ride on real bearings. They're really only there for traveling around corners where the inside tire is traveling at a slower speed than the outside tire. And that's not for a sustained time, only while the vehicle negotiates a curve. When you start drastically going beyond that, as in a burnout situation, you're stressing them way out. Yes, you can get away with it, but eventually, it will catch up to you.

I'm not standing on a soapbox here either. I was once young and drove vehicles with bald right rear tires from doing the same thing. I guess most guys do at one time or the other. I'm way past that now, but I realize other guys are at a different stage of their lives.

Ahhh the old sm465 and youth combined..... I remember in high school when I got my 78. So happy I had a 385, 4 speed manaul and 3.73 gears. Figured it would do an insanely awesome burnout with 1st being so low. So, into 1st it went. Floored the throttle went, and I dumped the clutch. Truck didn't really move, no tires spun, but I zinged that sucker to 9000rpm faster then sh*t! Motor lasted another 5,000 or so miles before blowing up. Don't be me.

This thread brought back some great memories...I did "the lurch" too. It helped me learn about floating valves as a rev limiter! Lol
