Aftermarket guages
So with my new gauges I was left with a problem. I can't find the correct threaded coupler to screw into the head. Napa has one too big and too small. What do I do? The coupler for the mechanical is still there, I had thought of tapping it to the size thread of the sending unit.

I did find one from Napa, I had the same problem, I think it was for a Ford, I will look tonight to see if I still have the part number. No need to tap there is one out there.

Sorry I could not find the old box, what I did was go to Napa and told them what thread and size I needed, plus I needed a certain ohm, I know the guys real well so we spent some time looking. Mine is a 235 in a 55 2nd but I was using a cluster out of a 57 truck so I needed the correct ohm too, seems I had one that was to high that fit so I will see if I can locate that one it may work fine with aftermarket gauge. Sorry I will keep looking

I had a couple of different gauges on my 235 and never had a problem, I assume you took the fitting out of the block? Most senders have a "bulb" that needs be in the water jacket. Its been 30 years, I can't remember if the gauges came with an transition fitting or were direct bolt in. If you live in a metro area, most places that fabricate hydralic, etc. lines also have an extensive collection of different fittings and adapters. Do not use silicone tape when you install it, it need a good clean ground to the engine to read correctly.

I'm like Orrieg I can't remember what the fitting is that the original temp gauge bulb screws into is. I'd suspect that there is a pipe thread in the block or head that the "transitional" fitting screws into and the nut that holds the bulb in screws into that. I have a 215 way in the back of one of my sheds but there is too much junk in front of it to be able to look at it quickly.

Right now I have a mechanical guage. The bulb on the end of the line slides into a fitting that screws into the block. But it's like you all described. |

This was bugging me so I did some research. I found that 5/8 - 18 is NOT a standard size, except in the gas industry (think welders, medical gas, etc.). You might go to your local welding supply or medical supply store and see if they can get an bushing for 5/8 - 18 male to your size. I went out to my 40 year accumulation of brass and steel fitting thinking I might have an old bushing but everything I found was NPT not straight threads.

I just bought a set of the reproduction gauge trim rings for the original gauges and used those as sort of a spacer
