Re: 292 Engine specs
So I actually figured out something...I think(Its dangerous when I do ;-)...Anyhow! 10:0:1 compression is 240 pounds I believe..so..7:6:1 or 8:0:1 would be at least 150-170 pounds of compression right? If so...MAN!!! My 292, which is down to 95 pounds mind you, only has like...5:0:1 or even less.

Re: 292 Engine specs
Yikes that sounds like trouble, well at least you have a spare engine in your parts truck.

Re: 292 Engine specs
You have a longer duration hot-rod cam in there, don't you TJ? That lowers the dynamic (or "cranking" or whatever) compression, because the intake valves are still open longer while the piston is coming back up. As a result, you effectively shorten the available stroke/cylinder volume you are compressing.
The gauge itself may also be reading a little low, and you do have some loss from advertised even in stock form from the pistons being down in the bores from spec (and from valve timing to some extent). Here's an example of a dynamic comp. calculator: http://www.wallaceracing.com/dynamic-cr.php |

Re: 292 Engine specs
It appears the compression is down to about 5:7:1- 6:0:1..somewhere in there is 95 pounds. The 292 in my 64 shows 120 pounds in all cylinders..and it runs perfectly fine..as does my 66's. Both are stock internally...course...someone may have done something to the 292 in my 66 later on before I got a hold of it. Maybe new pistons or something that ended up lowering the compression..maybe I have a blown head gasket...not sure. On the calculator I used the correct 3.875 bore and 4.120 stroke..connecting rod length of 6.700 and what the heck is "Static compression"? Anyhow..I put that as the stock 8:0:1 ratio and it came out as 184 pounds(If I'm remembering correctly). Well...getting to be time for a rebuild! LOL!

Re: 292 Engine specs
You may want to try dumping a small amount of oil down each cylinder are retesting the compression. This will help you determine if it is head or block issue causing low compression.

Re: 292 Engine specs
Good luck hope it's nothing seriously wrong with it. My back up motor is a 327 although it is worst off than the 292

Re: 292 Engine specs
Huh--interesting then. BTW, "static compression" is just that; the volume of the bore/stroke divided by the volume of the combustion chamber, etc.

Re: 292 Engine specs
By the way you make these 292 engines sound, I don't think I will even need to keep the 327 around as a spare. The 327 is actually a marine engine that I was thinking about converting over to road use, but now I may as well leave it alone.

Re: 292 Engine specs
Just attempted removing 49 years of grease of of the 292 engine and 3 speed transmission today. I used an engine degreaser made by spray nine and then powerwashed it all off, I did this multiple times and there is still grease on the block. Anyone have any ideas of how to get this stuff off in one try.

Re: 292 Engine specs
I think I may be missing a piece of my bell housing between my 3 speed tranny and the 292 on the bottom by the oil pan, the rest of the engine seems weathered except there. There are bolts holes and the steel is still shiny. Anyone have a picture of this area so I can compare it to mine?

Re: 292 Engine specs
Sounds like you are missing the dust cover for the clutch; I'd guess probably something like 5% of these trucks today have that piece still attached.
I wouldn't (and don't) think twice about the lack of that cover, personally. Others may chime in, but it seems to more or less have been a solution to a problem that doesn't exist IME/IMO. |

I thought I was missing a part, I'll look for one and if I find one I'll bolt it on
