Factory Radio and Cigarette Lighter for a 79
Hello all,
I'm hoping to replace my current aftermarket AM FM cassette player with a factory AM/FM radio. I'm also hoping to replace the missing cigarette lighter with a factory unit for that year. These are both for a 1979 GMC and both are listed on the SPID. Not sure if it matters but the SPID states AM FM radio and doesn't specify stereo. If you have either of these items in your 1977 through 1980 truck (or in your stash) and could post a picture I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Peter |

Re: Factory Radio and Cigarette Lighter for a 79
Hi Peter,
Sounds like your truck probably came with the RPO-U69 AM/FM pushbutton radio. Is U69 the number listed on your SPID? The 1979 GMC factory sales brochure shows an example of this radio in the dash at the top of page 12 (not a very large/clear view though) http://brochures.slosh.com/1979/gmcpickups12.jpg This page shows a better view of the U69 radio faceplate: http://monza.homestead.com/audio.html It's for H-body cars, but by the mid/late 70's GM was using pretty much the same radios across the board in most of their vehicles. If having the exact original radio isn't a huge concern, you can use any 78-87 GM truck radio. Many (but not all) 78-up GM car radios will fit too. The 77 & older radios have different electrical plugs on the back. |

Thanks for the great information Ray, that image on the H-Body page is especially helpful. Yes, my SPID lists option U69 AM/FM RADIO.

Re: Factory Radio and Cigarette Lighter for a 79
I am sure I have a radio in the garage out of my 78 Silverado, I will look the first time I get back in the shed.
I am sure it was a working unit when I removed it to add a "Casset", stepping up back then!!
