64 C10 Engine swap
Alright, so I am a long time follower of this forum but a first time posting. I just bought a 63 C10 long bed last night and I am getting ready to go to work with her. So I bought her with a small block 305 with a th350. The 305 has a cracked head but the tranny is good. I am wanting to swap the 305 for a 350. From what I have read the swap should be really easy (if not let me know). What I am trying to figure out is, the engines I am looking at putting in her come from a either a 86 (carb), 350 or a 91 (TBI) 350. Which would work best and be easiest. I am looking for a quick swap so I can get her on the road. Both motors are the same price and require new rings and probably valve seals. So it is a matter of which one will work best. Any input is appreciated. Or if anyone has a better idea I am open minded. Thanks.

Re: 64 C10 Engine swap
Welcome....Great looking truck, but its not a 63. 60-63 had wrap around windshields and different doors. That's a 64-66 model. Your title said 64 c-10 though, so I'm guessing just a typo.
Personally I'd go with the 350. The swap is pretty straight forward minus wiring the engine. What trans are you going to be running? Truck looks pretty solid too....we'll want tons more pics.

Re: 64 C10 Engine swap
Yeah, fat finger syndrome. It is a 64 throughout the post I typed both 63, and 64. But she is a true 64. And I'm keeping the th350 in. I've always looked that tranny and she works great. So I'm only going to swap motors.

Re: 64 C10 Engine swap
Would their be any difference between the two motor. A 86 that was carbed and a 91 that had a tbi. I am keeping it carb style.

Re: 64 C10 Engine swap
i would like to know how much for the motors. If your spending say $750 or more, go get a crate motor from Jegs- around $1500.

Re: 64 C10 Engine swap
They are both direct bolt in engines, but the '86 would probably easier to deal with and quicker to get running. Everything that is on the 305 that's in there now (distributor, carb, intake, etc.) will work on the '86 motor.

Re: 64 C10 Engine swap
For either one you will a matching flywheel. The 86 up has a balancer on the flywheel. . For the 91 you will need a special intake manifold.

Re: 64 C10 Engine swap
As said, either engine will bolt right up, but you will want the flexplate that comes with those engines. The '86 and up small blocks use a different flexplate or flywheel than the '85 and earlier small blocks. If you go with the '91, you will have to get a carburated intake manifold for a '87-'95 small block. You say that both engines need "new rings and probably valve seals" If the engine needs rings, it needs a complete rebuild. There is no sense in wasting time and money just putting rings in a wore out engine.

Re: 64 C10 Engine swap
If the engines need rebuild You are better of and cheaper in the long run to get a crate engine. Look for a good low mile used motor that you can hear run before buying a $200 engine that needs rebuilt. I just went through this on my 66. the crate engine was a wash price wise on rebuilding the one I had.
