Re: Once was long, but now is short!

All the shops around here that lengthen or shorten truck frames use a butt weld and then glove it or some put it on the inside of the frame alot of stretched trucks get double framed for dump trucks or grain trucks.

Re: Once was long, but now is short!

You guys do realize that the steel used in a tractor is a lot better than what GM used on the C series trucks. More welded surface the better in this case, I would do the z cut and reinforcement plates. If your boxing the frame and it overlaps where the frame was cut, it should be good.

Hate to bring this back up but I thought this would be useful especially because I'm about to splice my frame and was debating on which technique to use...

Even this wont stop people from saying a straight cut is the devil. I straight cut mine almost 10 yrs ago now and its perfectly fine. I've hauled quite a bit of stuff in it sense and twice a little to much making the front end pretty light (gravel one time and lumber the next). No signs of cracking/deformation anywhere around my cut or anywhere else on the frame. I'm still alive and didnt kill myself or anyone else in the process, but what do I know I've never stayed at a hoilday inn express...

Lol. Yeah I'm going to straight cut it too and gusset the top and bottom flanges. May box that area in also...

Mine has a fish plate on the back, thats it. The guy I hired to help and do the welding had a prior job building rollback wreckers and he said that was more than enough. I had pre made plates for the inside, outside and top and bottom for extra support so he only used the inside one. His welding was a thing of beauty and I trusted his judgment. As far as I'm concerned he was right and did a awesome job..

Re: Once was long, but now is short!

Not only did I cut mine straight, then I stick welded it with 7018 rods and my arc welder.

Proper joint fit up, good welding practices, and a reinforcing plate will cover the safety aspect with room to spare. Worst case, some time down the road you'd see a little crack propagating in the area that you'd have to root out and re weld. The truck isn't going to break in half. That pickup bed being bolted on with bolts both in front of and behind the joint adds a truss effect also.

Every day I see terrifying frame mods on all of the local guys air bagged trucks. Frame sections made out of used junk steel, no reinforcing plates anywhere, and welded with 110v flux machines. Even that junk doesn't break in half. A well executed butt slice is worlds better than that crap.

Re: Once was long, but now is short!

Straight cut here also. We made a backing plate with 3" of the cut off frame (for the inside), and a fishplate for the outer with the rest. I think I will be OK there too.

Re: Once was long, but now is short!

I'm glad you finished the truck, and posted the results. The truck looks great!

BTW - what did you do with the engine? Rebuild or upgrade? That truck would be a towing dream with a 12 valve Cummins and 5 speed.

Swap in 16gal swb gas tanks vs the 20gal lwb tanks (or 1 bigger burb tank).

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: Once was long, but now is short!

The truck has a used van engine in it. i have been gathering parts to rebuild the original engine. Hopefully some day it will be a vortec headed 383 tbi, lol. It has new shortbed tanks, which i cant say that i recommend, since they dont appear to have the original style baffles in them and the gauge moves dramatically through hills and curves. It also has aftermarket bedsides that dont fit very well. My body man worked on them extensively and they look ok except bed is way to wide in the front and taillights fit horribly. If i had it to do over, i would put a single tank in the rear and spend more time trying to find a good short bed. Actually i have been workin on this

Mine was also stick welded with 7018 if I remember right. He did fab work an welding as a side job an had a trailer setup with most everything he would need an a nice miller welder/generator unit. I had some cool pictures of him while he was cutting the frame an then also welding it but I lost them when my computer died many years ago....
