Question gas gauge troubleshooting

i put my dash back in after swapping from a reg. gauge dash to a dash with a tach in it. but now i found my gas gauge doesnt work. should i try putting in the other gas gauge that worked in the other dash or is there a way to troubleshoot it. maybe the circuit board is bad. ??????

Find the brown wire that comes out of the upper right corner of the fuse box. That's your fuel gauge wire. Make sure it's connected to the fuse box.
Now pull the wire off the sender at the tank. Your gauge should go to way over full if it's working (with the key on). If you short the wire to ground, the gauge should go to empty. If it won't exhibit either of these tendencies, pull the connector off the back of your new instrument panel and clean it and the contacts on the flex-circuit. Don't scrape them but use a soft pencil eraser instead. If all else fails, try swapping just your old fuel gauge back in. It might just be toast, but that isn't too common.

Then most likely you are not getting voltage to the guage its self. The brown wire is kinda like the ground...the more ground it gets, the more the needle moves. Howeve, if it is getting no power, the needle won't move no matter what you do with the ground.
Pull the inst panel and look at the printed circuit. I had to repair mine on the GMC...pretty easy really.

you might check an make sure the printed circuit is the same beween the 2 panels, I've never seen a tach dash, but they might use a different plug with contacts in different places.
