Maiden Voyage
I just got the first chance to drive my truck. I drove it to get it inspected. I had "new" wheels and tires put on. I say new but it's actually some used tires mounted on a set of 1996 Impala SS rims I had. 275/55/17 Dunlops. I took pics and will post them on Monday. (forgot the cable to the digital camera)
The front end is shot. It will need a complete rebuild. For now I just bought 4 shocks and the center drive shaft bearing... and a headlight .... |

Maiden Voyages are always cool, even better when they make it home under their own power.

I just put SS Impala wheels on my truck. I went with Kuhmo Stx tires. 255/50/17. There is a picture of it on the 60-66 board.

Update
Ok. I just took it for a 130 mile trip. In order to get it ready I changed all 4 shocks. Much Better. I had to replace a headlight. done. Then was the center support bearing. Not fun. The support bearing went fine, but you have to remove the universal joint. I hate them.. after pounding the S#!% out of it I was only able to get it half apart. I also dented the shaft in the process. I took it to have someone heat it with a tourch to get it out. Then I went to put the new one in ... it doesnt fit(too long).. either the clips are a few thousandths too fat or maybe it was because I opted for the Heavy Duty one from the parts store ... Since I figured grinding the clips seemed like a bad idea, i ground the caps .. only the raised lip .. about the thickness of a credit card ... only then did i get them to fit... long story even longer .. I think I feel a vibration .. but since this is the only the second time driving the truck .. who knows what its from ...
To top it all off .. I am about 100 miles into the 130 .. and Fzzzttt .. some thing shorts .. I loose my tail and brake lights .. my interior goes black ... I have head lights and signals ... grrrr... the horn keep buzzing on and off .. and i mean buzz... (i thought that was odd) .. so I drove the rest of the way with the turn signal on ... people mus of thought I was an ASS!! Well I guess I have something to do after work Monday .... I'll get pics ASAP .... |

Well the short was the dome light wire that was pinched between the cab and the gas tank behind the seat ....
Now I hear a noise from the drive shaft. I hope I put the center bearing in ok. Thats what it sounds like. Here is a pic to compare the wheels & tires that came with it and the new wheels & tires. |

I dont'k know what the back spacing measures, but they fit great. Even with the 275 wide tires there is still an inch and a half space between the rubber and the inside edge of the bed on the rear. The front fits well also, no rubbing, lock to lock... If I can remember to, I'll take a pic from the back to show the tire widts and spacing ....

Congrats on the voyage! I have been there on many occasions where it's one thing after another on a trip. But I always come back, giving it another chance. I think I'm more forgiving of my truck than I am of anything else!

Damn fine truck and sits right too! Don't worry about the gremlins, you'll get them worked out.

Good looking truck, and any trip that you can drive home from is a good one.
