Re: Brake booster question
Try MBM power brakes, they make a bolt on assembly with no adapter bracket needed. Several other companies make kits, too.
Or just buy new parts instead of salvage for the 81-87 application. I personally NEVER reuses salvage yard brake parts, but some do. |

Re: Brake booster question
I don't think there is much difference in the universal booster, master, prop valve assemblies from CPP, POL or ECE. I would go with who ever has the best customer service.
I have yet to see an aftermarket booster with a mounting bracket that does not require drilling holes to bolt up to a '60-'66 truck firewall. Unless it is a replacement for an original booster. But then you must have the original mounting bracket and wedge.

Re: Brake booster question
Yea captain fab I'm going to use your bracket but I think I'll probably go with the brothers kit or factory components from my local parts store for 81-87 c10 the only think I haven't searched yet is the jd3 and jd5 brake codes for the 81-87 could possibly be jd3 with 1" front rotors and jd5 is 1.25 front rotors

Re: Brake booster question
I'm going to use a new MC/booster from a 75. I don't like the look of the plastic MC on the newer models. Orielly has them for around $150 and it includes the push rod. I got 75 1/2 ton parts from the wrecking yard (rotors and calipers). I rebuilt the calipers and lucked out with the rotors, they look like they were replaced within months of the truck being scrapped.

Re: Brake booster question
For me to use the brake booster from the 73 to 87 trucks I had to moify the brake rod. Bascally cut the rod and weld a sleeve to use the stock brake rod from the 65. The eye hole is differnt and the rod needs to be longer if I can remember right.

Re: Brake booster question
I used the CPP setup. Fit and finish perfect, all the hardware you could need and more, comes with adjustable pushrod and prop valve too. Only had to drill two holes.
Cost about $239 plus freight. I have been buying CPP stuff from FleaBay instead of direct from CPP because it ships faster and it seems like customer service is better when PayPal and Ebay are breathing down their necks. Truck Shop has a pre-bent brake line kit for this conversion for less than sixty bucks that fits GREAT. I had to get two reducers from the local hardware store to adapt the lines to the stock tees, but other than that it was flawless. |

Re: Brake booster question
It was the 9" single diaphragm booster. I have noticed that there is not a lot of reserve boost (I have a bit of a cam) but it seems to stop very well, and the adjustable push rod helped to work through the normally spongey-soft GM brake assist and give a good pedal feel.

Re: Brake booster question
Yes, it was all assembled...kinda of a shame to paint that pretty yellow cad plated booster black though IMHO...But I doubt that the warranty will be affected if you do paint it.
