new truck strange motor?
i just traded my old 62 c10 step side for an old farm truck. i saw it on a trailer at Brahms being hauled off to scrap. it is a 1975 c30. no bed 5 speed tranny with low gear. it has a 350 but the alternator, starter.... it all says frigid air!!!! what is that about? it has no title, no keys. how can i put a new cylinder in without keys? i am verry eager to start it. changed the oil already. i have it sitting at the back of the property will post picks later. oh also tranny only shifts in lo and first. what is the deal? is it froze?

Re: new truck strange motor?
If it's an original '75 trans then it's not a five speed.
Sounds like it could be the M20 four speed (three forward gears plus the creeper gear). Waiting for pics before passing judgement on the engine questions. K

Re: new truck strange motor?
Ive had a couple of the trucks that had a weird five speed. first gear super granny low was over to the left drivers side and up. the second gear still a granny low was up just to the right. third was straight down from there. fourth up and over and fifth straight down. Reverse was far to the right and up. The trans wasn't very much physically larger and a SM 420 granny four speed. the final gear ratio in high was still 1to1.

Ignition Cylinder with keys = http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cc/full.aspx?Page=183 They're cheaper on Rockauto.
Also the howto part. http://youtu.be/i8CXEwemYKk Transmission sounds like a SM465 to me. Shift pattern:

Re: new truck strange motor?
Thanks got info!! I will order cylinder thru oreilleys. The truck says it is a supper custom on the dash. It says custom 20 on side of booth finders? If it was a 20 why is it a dully? I really like this old truck. Can't Waite to drive it on the farm. But I was just thinking would that tranny bolt up to a 454? And will it bolt up to a 283 motor with a sagnaw 3 speed bellhausing?

the problem was with his carrier. I never knew what was actually going on, but when it got stuck, he would remove the shift boot and the shift lever and set his carrier back to a starting poisition and put it all back together. Basically something was worn and shifting through second would align all the parts to allow him to shift into another gear without the parts getting hung up on each other. I would suggest removing the shift boot and see whats worn out the most, that's probably your culprit.

Re: new truck strange motor?
1.) Use a steering wheel puller.
2.) Yes, SBC and BBC's use the same bellhousing bolt pattern

Re: new truck strange motor?
Judging by the grille and mounting hardware your truck may be a 73-74, not a 75.

Probably has stiff rusty hinges which made the hood bend and is no longer lining up with the latch.

Re: new truck strange motor?
I beleive Super Custom was mid-level trim for 73'-74' on GMC's. And you also have Chevy logo's on the cab trim. So my guess is someone did some swapping of something, somewhere.

Re: new truck strange motor?
If the hood won't move, shoot some penetrating oil (not WD40) in the hinge pins, let it soak, shoot again, let soak for a few days and try to rock it free.
That hood's toast and they tended to buckle when the hinges got tight... |

Re: new truck strange motor?
Super Custom was the GMC mid trim level for 73 & 74 only. Chevy was Custom Deluxe.
The steering wheel and door panels look like 73-76 mid trim level pieces. The Frigidaire label is on a Harrison Frigidaire A6 A/C compressor. Big ugly and not fuel friendly. You have the SM465 cast iron granny 4 speed. They are tough to kill. The hinges are stiff. Someone got ham handed and tried to force the hood down anyway so the hood is toast. You can't brace it and not have it be a safety issue. Those bend points are a crumple zone purposely engineered into those hoods. Braced hoods can be a guillotine blade coming thru the A pillars and the windshield in an accident. You can hit the hinges with WD40 or better yet PB-Blaster while working them up and down an inch or two. Once they're somewhat freed up liberally spray lithium grease into all of the pivots and leave it for a couple days. It'll latch, with care, then. It'll still have a big bend across the hood.

Re: new truck strange motor?
Thank you all!! This is slot to take in. I will go a motor swap and put in a 305 v8. I will also install saddle tanks. Propane? Realley??? Wow. As for the front tires I dont know. I think it had an axle swap on the rear but I have always wanted a 1 ton. When money isn't so tight I will install some keys. The truck has an Oklahoma state inspection sticker that says 1973. I will put a pick of it up. As for the hood I will just do away with all of it and get some hindges and hood from salvage.
