Start with a leak down check. If the exhaust valves are bad, you'll hear air out the exhaust pipe. If the intake valves are bad, you'll hear it through the intake/carb. If neither of these things happen, your valves are fine.

If the rings are bad, you'll hear it through the oil fill or PCV. If this doesn't happen, your rings are fine.

If you have a bad head gasket, you will see bubbles in the radiator. If this doesn't happen, your head gaskets are fine.

If none of the above happens then your problem is with fuel delivery, spark, or vacuum leaks or any combination there of.
