1966 C-10 Starter Hangs up on Flywheel

Hey guys! I have a 1966 C-10 with a 350 cu. in., and a manual 3 speed on the tree. New starter (the type with 3 horizontal mounting bolts to the bellhousing). The new starter did not come with any shims. The bendix hangs up on the flywheel. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanx

Re: 1966 C-10 Starter Hangs up on Flywheel

I would take the starter off and compare it to the old one, looking at the flange to make sure it is square. You may have one that does not have a level mounting surface

I had this problem with my '67. it had a 350/sm420 with the 3 bolt starter on there. I replaced the starter with a new one from autozone. It kept hanging up on the flywheel, even though it was seated correctly. It drove me crazy. I took it back and matched it up with another they had. Turns out that the mounting flange on the starter was slightly curved. This made the starter seat at an angle that I was not able to see and made it bind with the flywheel. They rebuilt the guts of it, but keep the casing. Now I always double check the flange.

Had the same problem. After a lot of trying different things, I shimed the out side bolt only and it works fine now. Like he said check to see if it the flange
