I am going to a 400hp crate 350 from summit racing and I want to go to a new aluminum radiator with an alum schrod and a double fan
I am seeing prices from $150-1500 I count want to have to buy the item twice but also don't want to throw money at something unnecessarily I have a 65 shortbed stepside |

Re: Why are the prices all over the place?
I learned about this one from other members right here on the forum.http://www.speedcooling.com/ I got one for myself (great price) and I am happy with it. I only had to modify my lower mount cradles a bit because the lower tank on the new one is wider. I simply cut my cradels in two and mig welded in an extension. Then scrounged up some extra rubber for cushioning in the cradle. My engine is cool and happy too.

Go to Champion radiators their site is a pain but an aluminum 2 core for your truck is right around 200, I put one in my old truck with a big block and never saw my gauge go over 190.

Re: Why are the prices all over the place?
I have one from Champion, it is a 2 core with 1" cores, it cools my LSx with AC and Texas heat very well.
Also, this is the 2nd one I have had, first one sprung a leak and they replaced it for free!

Look at the tail end of my build thread and you can see my Champion and fan install.
Start at #78 of the thread.

Re: Why are the prices all over the place?
I went with one from a vendor R&D Fabrication http://www.rndfabrication.com/CrossflowRadiators.html I only ordered it about a week ago so it's not in my hands yet BUT it's guaranteed to cool a stock 454 pulling a 28' travel trailer in our triple digit summers.
just a heads up the 2 row Champion radiators only have 3/4" wide tubes and the 3 & 4 rows are only 5/8" tubes. More tubes = more turbulence & less effective cooling. The smaller tubes speak for themselves. I'm not knocking Champion Radiators, I'm just saying to take a good look at what you need or expect from your new radiator and go what will work for your needs. Another example, I had to replace the radiator on my 02 PT Cruiser a couple of years back. I bought a cheap one from Auto Zone or O'reame's I forgot which. My PT was running hotter than normal this last summer. While doing some routine maintenance I noticed all the lower cooling fins were folded over not allowing any flow through the last 6" of the radiator. All the fin's protected by the A/C condenser were fine the lower non protected fins had no flow. I didn't notice when I put the radiator in but the cooling fins weren't much better than aluminum foil. All I ask is to research (which I'm sure why you made your post) and figure what your needs and future needs are and make your purchase based on that. |
