Like the title says, what is a good replacement 6 lug rear axle for a 55-59 1/2 ton?

What would make an axle best? late '80s to early '90s Toyota 4wd V6 trucks have a six lug pattern that matches the original, plenty of strength, and are close in width.

67-69 c10 are 1/2" wider wms to wms and take a 1310 u joint

If you've got the bucks and need the strength, I think the recipe for a 14 bolt is to use the C&C 14 bolt & Solid Axle Industries hubs. Should get you down to 62-63" WMS-WMS - but this might be gross overkill for your application.

The 12 bolt is probably a better, more reasonable bet.

The C-10's of those years had coil springs on the rear while most of the GMC half tons ran leaf springs making one from GMC an easier swap.

You might look at a 2010 to 12 or 13 Chevy Colorado 4x4 which has a 59.8 rear track width. They probably aren't inexpensive though.

Most of the 67-68 GMC's leaf spring rears were Dana 44's, most had 3.54 gear sets..

Torched the angled coil perches off and welded some 2" new ones when I did mine. Worked great.

I have a 65 GMC pickup leaf spring rear in my '57.

It is a Dana 44 and had 3.54 gears.
Evidently, the rear sat for along time and had rust on the gears so I had it rebuilt with new gears, a new trac-lok posi and all the bearings. Stayed with the 3.54 but other ratios are available.

The spring perches need to be moved inward just a tad but the width is perfect.

Finding brake drums for it was a challenge. I ended up buying brake drums for a Jeep waggoneer and having the center holes enlarged at a machine shop. The lug holes have to be drilled out to 9/16" from 1/2" too. Fit perfect now.

Another issue is E-brake cables. The ends are different at the backing plates. Either have to get custom cables or modifiy the brake backing plates. I did the latter.

I have a C10 rear with leaf spring pearches welded on for TF trucks, 100.00 in central florida.
