In Oregon, you can get pulled over for "gross pollution," meaning copius smoke from the tailpipe.
I've never heard of it happening, though I could see it being an issue for the rolling coal crowd. To each their own, but that's one silly automotive trend in my opinion. |

California picks and chooses. They encourage you to report smoking vehicles, but I see more diesels tuned to smoke all the time. We are up to our ears around here with people who use one of the big 3 4wd diesels as a daily to school or the office. You couldn't count just the lifted powerstrokes you see around the bay area in a day. You'll only need one hand to count the ones that have ever been locked in. Lots good deals on big trucks that are covered in useless crap though.

Ah another "I don't need no smog parts" thread. You DO need those parts, you are exempt from being tested, not exempt from needing the parts to be intact and functioning. Properly functioning emission equipment is undetectable as far as performance and economy are concerned.

I have dealt with this in Oregon for years ... You pull off the EGR Valve , get a new EGR Valve Gasket , and make a block off plate and reattach plate & gasket .. Pull off smog pipes to manifold and install manifold plugs .. Pull off smog pump and brackets , get rid of belt , and ready to go .. Whether your in DEQ or not ... You are exempt from emissions testing of the vehicle because of the cut off years .... The only one that can ticket you is when you go thru DEQ with said items missing , only if you needed to go thru .. You Don't .. I've ran my 86 Suburban thru for years , they never even lifted the hood ... Good Luck !! Didn't mean to write a book .. Your Good !!

I can see both sides of this discussion. I had an S10 twenty years ago that was loaded with smog crap. I had to do engine work anyway, so I stripped most of the smog stuff off. There were no emissions checks at the time. Well, the engine ran better and my mileage went up, so I was happy with that. But with an LS engine, to pick something modern, I wouldn't do that.
I've been running inline chevy's for the last 20 years, but none of mine have been new enough to have emissions stuff. I look at it this way; the inlines were designed prior to 1963, and they didn't think of emissions then. So anything the engine has is globbed on. But this isn't the case with LS, which was designed with emissions from the get-go.

greg64 ... I agree ... In regards to the newer engines LS and some of the others , that's the way they were designed to be and there performance is remarkable along with the ability to do it with all the emissions stuff ..

I am in the same smog testing area as the OP. My 1980 also has the 250 I6. It had all of the smog equipment stripped off of it when I bought it. I just recently ran it through DEQ to get it licensed and had no trouble. As someone already said, they don't even lift the hood anymore. They just slide a mirror underneath to make sure you have a cat (I split my exhaust and have 2 - they didn't care as long as I had one). Then they put a sniffer in the tailpipe and ask you to rev it up to about 2500 rpm. It took me two tries to get through, as my truck also had a giant rochester 2-jet from a 455 Pontiac installed when i bought it, and it took some adjustment to get it right. Truck runs just fine without the smog pump and EGR - and it passes the emissions testing.
Yes - everyone who said that it is illegal to remove smog equipment is correct - but isn't the intent of the law to limit pollution? And if my truck passes within the limits set for year/make/model/engine, isn't that compliance with the intent of the law? I think this is why Oregon quit doing visual inspections under the hood - why police the equipment, when the only thing they are really worried about is what comes out the tailpipe? |
