I need one too. So i called the chevy dealership today. He said he can get a 1980 400 to 205 adapter for $275. Is there any differance between the years on this adapter???
Randy Dont mean to steal your thread, but this info might help you too.

i think the spline count on the input of the 205 might have changed in the mid 80's. I dunno if this would be a problem or not.

Go to www.offroaddesign.com they have a write up about the differences in the 205's.The 400/205 has a bigger input shaft bearring than the 350/205.Needs to be taken apart and machined to fit the new one.Just for your info in case it is not a 400/205 case. The adapter should be the same for all 400's.

In 84 or 85 they changed the shape and bolt pattern on the 205 case. It depends on what year your t-case is. Find out before you order because they will NOT interchange.

The 80 version will have the round pattern that bolts to the t-case. I have heard the older version refered to as the race-track bolt pattern. Just make sure you get the one you need for your t-case. I have a brand new one (race-track) that I dont need. Just want what I paid for it, was $280.

Vince at 4XHEAVEN said there is only one 400 to 205 adapter. I assumed it was for my 72 transfer case. Now i,m not so shure.
Can you bolt a 400 to a old style T.C.??

What 1tonswb said is correct according to the info at Off Road Design. The race track pattern is the adapter you need. But the TH400 never came in pre 73 4x4 trucks so the t-case most likely has the male input, you will need the new input gear and bearing if you have a 72 t-case. The case will have to be machined to accept the bearing, I had mine done by a local shop for $40 after I dissasembled the unit. I can post pics of the adapter one I get my camera batteries charged.
