700r4 shifter lever question
Some how, in the midst of replacing the 700r4 in my 78' Cheyenne, I lost the shifter lever.
I must have left it on the trans when dropped mine off as a core, so now I'm in need of one. I've looked for one online and can't find anything. The aftermarket ones don't look like they'd work. I'm using what looks to be the original style linkage. Anybody know where I could get what I need? |

If the place you dropped off your core is local see if they have one , if not shoot buy a local transmission shop and see if that have one laying around . All the places around here have a nice box or bins of odds and ends of stuff just like that .
The odd little bushing I couldn't find at the auto parts store for the linkage I needed to finish the install for my 350 to 700r swap cost me a box of donuts at the local transmission shop

I bought the shifter lever/bracket from ebay but, I'm not positive its the right one. It doesn't seem to line up correctly.
Do I have something adjusted wrong? I really can't remember what the original bracket looked like. Does anyone know if they were different year to year? Here are some pics of what I have going on. This is where the shifter linkage has a fixed point to pivot off of. This is the bracket going onto the trans. This is a clearer shot of the bracket. |

The piece you bought slips over the square part of the stud on the transmission and is retained by a nut.
then you slide the rod through like in the last picture and install the cotter pin to retain it. |

You have the right parts. You will need to manually shift the transmission with bracket attached to a certain position to make installation of the rod easier.

Thanks fellas.
I'm missing the nut too. Any idea what size it must be? I'm assuming it's metric? No big deal though, I guess I can just buy one of each size and see which one fits |

If the lever doesn't line up once it's on the transmission then it's the wrong part. Some are clocked differently.

Lokar makes a great linkage kit. Installs easy and is adjustable. I have used three and not had any problems.
I know it isn't factory, but man it sure works smooth. Makes the shifting feel brand new. |

No, it will be in the same position. It only fits on two ways and both are identical.

It lines up fine with Park and shifts into Reverse, Neutral, Drive and OD.
It won't shift into 2 or 1. I'm guessing I have the wrong bracket... or more likely, I need to do something to the shifter linkage? Also, I adjusted the TV cable out to the furthest adjustment. I took it for a spin around the block. It seems to shift very softly. I'm thinking I don't have the enough adjustment in the cable and that I need to replace it because it's worn. Is there a way to test to see if I need a new cable? |

You adjust it rearward, not forward. Then you floor the gas pedal to make it self adjust (engine not running). If it doesn't self adjust then it is stretched out and needs to be replaced.
Sounds like the wrong transmission part, it's clocked incorrectly. Or it's not adjusted right and the column has a stop for a three speed instead of a four speed, which would give you second but not first.

Better check the pressure on it before your pulling it again if it burns up in a heartbeat
