VIN search?

I have a VIN from my 1st truck (70 SWB) that I sold in the early 90's. Does anyone know if there is a service that can locate the most recent owner?

I know that privacy laws may make this impossible, but I wanted to try and find it to possibly buy it back. I asked a buddy of mine who is in the auto insurance business look it up, but he didn't get any hits on it all.

Even if it had been wrecked/junked, I thought at the very least it would have come back with the last owner.

Any suggestions?

Re: VIN search?

Try the local courts/dmv and explain the want to do it. Most will do a search for sentimental reasons like yours.

Re: VIN search?

My local DMV has no heart - but it's worth a shot! Look on the bright side, at least you can wait an hour or three before they say no. But again - it's worth a try. Have you tried CARFAX? That's an accident claim record, usually, but it might help (and might give you some sad news too, but hopefully only minor stuff). Hope you find it!

And WELCOME to the board. Any pictures of the old flame?

Re: VIN search?

DMV: No heart here either. Privacy laws prevent them from helping.
Carfax: Only works with newer vehicles with the 17 digit VIN.

I had a buddy of mine in the insurance business try and look it up and he couldn't find any record of it. I know the VIN is correct because I've decoded it just to verify that my "S" shouldn't have been a 5 or my zero and "O".

I think i am just out of luck and may have to find another one that is similar and start fresh...

I appreciate the replies.

Re: VIN search?

You can go to the TX DMV website, get the right form and get the last registered owner. Or you could a few years ago. You may need to tell them you bought the truck w/o a title and are trying to set things right.

See if you can find somebody who knows a dispatcher at the police or sheriff's office. They can run the VIN as a test. That way if it comes back as stolen or anything like that you don't have to worry about any of the hassles.
