73-87 250 to 292 swap, engine mount question

I'm swapping out my 250 for a 292 in my 1978 C10. I've been searching and searching for a photographs of the correct, passenger's side, engine mount and brackets. I've come up with nothing. There are hundreds of pics of 292s in pre-1973s, and I've seen a few of 292s in 73-87 K-Series, but I've come up blank on pics of the 292 in a 73-87 C-Series. I'm sure I'll have to fab up my own mounts or modify something else to work, but I want it to look as close to factory as possible. Does anybody have a factory 292 in a 73-87 C-Series? Photographs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Chevy's really good about having holes for most ever thing I think the right side mount sets back a little further. ide just order a motor mount see what looks like.

Re: 73-87 250 to 292 swap, engine mount question

I've read this before on a few other forums. They say you can just move the frame bracket forward (four inches), all the holes are already there. I've studied my current set up, there's no way to "just move it forward". There are extra holes in the upper frame rail flange that will probably work, but the bottom of the bracket will have nothing to bolt down to. It'll miss the cross member completely and interfere with the tie rod.

I know I can fab something, but I'd rather have the factory parts, or at least fab something that looks similar to the factory parts. Did they maybe cheat two inches to the front on the frame bracket and two inches to the rear on the engine bracket?

Re: 73-87 250 to 292 swap, engine mount question

I have a picture, but it does not show the bracket at its best. This is a 1978 C20 with its original 292. I do not know what the bracket looks like on a C10 with a 250, but maybe the frame on a C10 is different from the frame on a C20. I do not think a 292 was available on a C10. This is a picture that I already have. I can get a better one, if it will help, but it will not be until next week.

Re: 73-87 250 to 292 swap, engine mount question

From what I've been reading, the C10 and C20 frames are the same. That's the best pic I've seen thus far, but you're right, it's not quite showing exactly what I was looking for, though it does confirm that I have half of what I need. The bracket bolted to your engine is identical to the one on my 250.

A photograph (or several photographs from different angles) of the frame bracket would be greatly appreciated. Take your time, I'm in no hurry. My 292 is still on the engine stand and I'm sure it will be there the rest of the winter.

And I think you're right about the 292 not being available in the C10, but I don't care, the heart wants what it wants.

Thanks

I found this and on page 0-90 of the catalog it shows a pic of the left mount.

Oh, and if it's not too much trouble, a closer look at the power steering brackets would be a great help too.

Re: 73-87 250 to 292 swap, engine mount question

I wasn't sure which one to download, but I did find an illustration of what I was looking for. Looks like I'll have some fabrication to do, I doubt I'll be able to find the bracket I need. I went junkyarding earlier this week (for the first time in many years) and they aren't even stocking anything but Honda, Nissan and Subaru anymore. It was very disappointing. Thanks for the info though, it was a huge help.

Welcome, I know the feeling on the junk yards, there are 9 of them within 20 miles of me, only 2 of the 9 will have a square body. All the others are 2000 and newer.

Re: 73-87 250 to 292 swap, engine mount question

C20 frames are taller.
292 dress (brackets etc) are different due to the taller block. Most of the accessories bolt to the head which is in a different position on the 250's.

I know you could get 292's in the 3/4 tons, as well as 250's. Not sure if you could get 292's in 1/2 ton but it seems likely. Somewhere out ther there is a frame mount that is a bolt in.

Re: 73-87 250 to 292 swap, engine mount question

I have a 292 in my 77 P10 stock . The frame is the same as the c10 in the front engine and suspension area . I'll grab a couple of pics and post them later today . As for the PS brackets they will be different and took me some time hunting to find them when I added power steering to the step van as it wasn't even a option with the p10 half ton chassis in 77.

If you have a salvage yard that specializes in large commercial trucks, than you could look for bread trucks. I believe the 292 was the base engine for those.

Re: 73-87 250 to 292 swap, engine mount question

I live a few miles from a junkyard that specializes in trucks. He didn't have much in the way of L6 parts and said he ships most of that stuff overseas. I'm going to keep looking, but I have a feeling I'll be reproducing one in the fab shop.

Here is the power steering pump. Note that it places the pump where you need the 3rd pulley run on the water pump, alternator and balancer. You cannot see it in this picture, but the power steering belt does go a little around the alternator, so you need a 3 run pulley for that.

Re: 73-87 250 to 292 swap, engine mount question

So, while I was taking finals this morning, my father took it upon himself to double check the local junkyard. He asked to go out into the yard to loo around and after sifting through hundreds of of truck chassis guess what he found…. Thanks for all of the pics and replies. I no longer have to fabricate one but you guys were still a big help.

Re: 73-87 250 to 292 swap, engine mount question

I know that the 250 L6 should match up with 350 motor mounts, however I could be wrong. But anyone ever try to cross breed the years 73,77,80,86 and 89 into 1 truck?

FINALLY.... the pic ive been searching for.

its hard to tell in your pic, but are there 2 holes on the cross member side of the bracket?
if that is indeed what im seeing, then the bracket will just barely be touching the cross member correct?

im thinking of dropping a 292 into my truck and have searched many a hours looking for good pics(which it sounds like you have too)

anymore pics you could post of the bracket would be great, thanks again
