But yes, hot and idling in neutral (or park). And run it through the gear positions (P-R-N-D) if it's been sitting without being driven for a while.

DON'T OVERFILL! That's a bad thing to do. And realize that while the approximate fluid volume between lines on an oil dipstick is 1 quart, for the transmission it's 1 pint.
