Automatic Dimmer Switch?

Hi everyone, I'm deep into the wiring of my '57. I have a floor mounted dimmer switch which I would like to use it for another purpose other than a dimmer switch for the headlights.

If I'm not mistaken wasn't there a option on luxury cars back in the '60s or '70s that had a sensor somewhere in the grill that would sense oncoming vehicles and would automatically dim your headlights for you?

As I've been taking care of the wiring I had it in the back of my mind that I would just Google and order this automatic dimmer but I don't seem to find it anywhere.

Perhaps I'm not using the right terminology in my search, anybody heard of such an item in the aftermarket? Thanks, Jim

Stepside Jim. Yeah, they did have that option years ago. If I remember right it was on the dash on the left side. The Cadillac comes to mind. Some of the old guys on here will remember it. Nice idea.

Re: Automatic Dimmer Switch?

Gm and Mopar both had them in the 50's.
Do a search for Autronic Eye

Re: Automatic Dimmer Switch?

Clarance J, I remember a Cadillac, I don't remember who's car it was, but for some reason the dimmer stuck in my mind all these years.

67GMCkid, yup, that's it, the Autronic Eye. I did a quick search and although it comes up, it's mainly speaking of parts from the past, which was interesting reading about it.

For some reason I just figured by now surely (and don't call me Shirley) there would be some updated digital unit that would be a nice bolt on unit.

Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate it. Hmmmm, back to the drawing board.

Lots of DIY circuits around. Here's a fairly simple one:
