Talking Range Technology

Just bought a Range V8 for my 2013 Silverado. It blocks the AFM and makes it run on all 8 all the time. Worth every penny.

My EFI Live tune took the displacement on Demand away and I am not sorry.

Apparently there is an issue with carbon buildup on the cylinders that are not producing heat and the rings will get stuck. This is one of things that the shops are saying is causing some V8s to use oil.

Plus it runs way better without GM`s Active Fuel Management. I don`t know how good it would be with a custom tune , but afraid of warranty issues.

Truth be told, the connection of the Range Technology item could do the same thing to your warranty. If you are still running your GM monitoring through the OnStar, then they know you have something connected that affects your computer.

What do you find better about it?

I have a 2012 Yukon XL and I don't think it spends much time running on 4 cylinders.

What benefits does blocking the AFM give you?

I just got back home from a week's long trip to Atlanta, Ga. That is around 2000 miles round trip. I have had my fuel management changed with my tune and the computer keeps the engine in the 8 cylinder mode all of the time. I ran the majority of the distance through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee and Georgia, then back through
Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri to Kansas. I ran along with the traffic and that was around 75 MPH to 80 MPH. I got a repeated average of 20 to 20.5 MPG with my 5.3, 6 speed auto and 3.42 gears. There were a couple times that I dropped to around 19 MPG, but it was when I was pushing it harder and working the mountains. I cannot complain and was really surprised with the continued performance of a little greater than 20 MPG.I drove in rain, area temps from 68 degrees to 91 degrees and with some heavy traffic.

Pretty much any AFM truck 10 or newer shouldn't be having the oil consumption/exhaust smoke issue. They updated the AFM engines with splash shields, redesigned valve covers, and a few additional parts sometime in 2009. I did some extensive research on this issue after I changed my exhaust shortly after I got my 2008 GMC and notice smoke coming out when it switch back into V8 from V4. I was also a quart low after 1500 miles(happened to be the first 1500 miles I put on it after driving it off the lot). My engine got rebuilt with these parts, plus new pistons and rings, all on GMs dime at 99k.

I haven't encounter anyone with the same issues with updated AFM equipped 5.3's. Though, if I was going to get the AFM deactivated, I would go with a nelson performance tuned computer. Will cost you $300, and you get the best bang for your buck with all the additional tuning. Not currently running their computer in this truck, but it was amazing in my last truck. It was like picking up a brand new truck off the lot. Next on my list of mods for my GMC.

Sorta cold thread but I thought I'd add my $0.02

I went in blind, just snagged a '12 1500 4x4 LS. I only learned about the AFM deal while test driving them. The one I got already had cat back exhaust and has 3.08's. It was very noticeable when it went V4. Long story but within a day of owning () it I was disgusted with it. Hit the web and realized what a full-on tune would do for me but I've got until almost '18 on my powertrain warranty. Spotted the Range AFM dealio and read all the reviews. Two days later that little doo-dad saved a relationship. It does EXACTLY what I needed it to do. The only negative reviews I saw were dudes with '14 or '15 but it says right on their sight that there may be "bugs" with the new models and they are working on them. Tons of good reviews about their customer service, so if you fall into that category I'm sure they'd make right one way or another. I also got a 2' extension cable so I can pin it up under the dash. Seems like it'd be pretty easy to kick with it sticking down by your feet there. Plus it's got these LEDs that are as one person said in their review "a little too Tokoy Nights for me".

Worth every cent. I'd say my mileage has gone UP with it installed.
