used to stay on.
Burned my under dash wires. Bought a "stock" harness installed it. New starter harness n wih the key it wont start. When i hot wire it cranks over n wont stay on. New oem voltagr regulator n horn relay. Starter rebuilt n so is the generator/ alternator. New battery. Stumped, need help please

Make sure the hot wire to the coil stays hot with the key in the 'on' position.

Double check that you have constant 12v (always hot) to the key and not a 12v switched to the key (has power when the key is on). If memory serves me correctly, when you turn the key to the start position, it disconnects the other 12v switched items and that might explain why the solenoid isn't kicking over. And I agree with one of the other posts...make sure you have a good steady 12v switched power to the coil when the key is turning the motor over...I'd use a volt meter and check the voltage at the coil both when you turn the key to the start position and you are trying to start to motor as well as 12 volts when the key is in the "run" position... If you do have voltage at the key in the off position and in the start position but no voltage to the solenoid, you've got a bad key ignition...

Thanks guys for the input. It was a bad ignition switch. Cousin n i put a jumper on starter n hooked up a toggle switch. Turned it on like that then tried to turn it off with the key n it turns it off but it wont turn it on. I decided to leave the toggle switch in. Kindof like a kill switch or push to start.

using a toggle switch for starting, or for ignition, you need to make sure the toggle switch is rated for the load or you can fuse the contacts and start a fire. the starter should be a low amperage circuit to close the solenoid, but still can draw 10-15a, the ignition draw will be whatever is hooked to the ignition circuit but can be that high as well. the toggle switch will have its rated current printed on it. heat is the first clue you are drawing too much current, so feel it while in use.

so in other words kind of keep track of it that it doesnt get hot and cause a fire ha? I havent noticed it getting hot. guess i will just have to wait and see. thankd joe
