Question about 1964 stepside rear fender eyebrow or scallop for tail light ?
I just noticed that the rear fenders only 1964 gmc are different where the tail light mounts. Drivers side has a flat recess with an arch above sure the light is mounted- positions the light at a 90 degree angle to the road.
On the passenger side it has nothing , just the curve of the fender with light mounted in a hole in the fender, makes it about 110-120degrees to the road (pointing slightly upward). Just learning about these trucks, can some one educate me? Thanks |

step sides did not have lights in the fenders, they were mounted to a bracket on the rear bed post, however 66 had a standard reverse light mounted to the fender...
I will see if I can find a pic.

As Jon stated: Your left rear fender is from a '66 Fenderside and your right is from an earlier truck - maybe as far back as 1955. Left fender is designed to have a backup light where your tail light is currently mounted. Here is an image of my '64 Fenderside with tail lights in original location.

Maybe not the best example since this particular ad for '66 does not appear to have the provision (scallop) in the rear fender for the backup light. Might be a leftover ad from '65. Magazine ads are not always the best source for production run details.

Re: Question about 1964 stepside rear fender eyebrow or scallop for tail light ?
thanks Andice I found this info on
http://www.oldchevytrucks.com/blog/i...hting-1955-66/ looks like i have 66 fender on my 64! Hope I dont get in trouble for sharing it here! "The rear stepside fenders on the 1955 through 1966 are usually considered the same. The reproductions on both metal and fiberglass are listed in catalogs and related advertisements as being identical on the right and identical on the left. Not true if you are a perfectionist! In 1966 Federal automotive regulation required all cars and light trucks to have back-up lights. Thus, GM modified this fender with a stamped indention to better fit the required back-up light assembly" Anybody with a 66 want to trade driver side fenders??? |
